Question about 2002 Mazda MPV
Had the same problem and never found the exact problem but did find a way around it. there is a small plug on the left side -inside of the steering column plastic, that controls the locking mechanism for the ignition (2 wire plug). if you unplug it, it de-energizes the lock and the key will turn. I think the problem is actually tied to a safety interlock on the transmission that looks for the vehicle to be in park before it will unlock the ignition lock. this keeps you from taking the key out while the vehicle is in gear.
