Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

Coolant drain 96 taurus...throws coolant out of reservoir cap when engine is switched off after a normal 12- 15 mile drive...temp gauge stays within normal range...changed thermostat to no effect.

I have a 96 Jetta GL and I just replaced the thermostat in it because I have no hot air coming out of the vents and now my car is running hot. What is the problem and how could I fix it?

Air pockets in radiator


Air can be purged. While your engine is cool remove radiator and reservoir caps. Place funnel in radiator. Turn heat to the highest position and start vehicle. Add coolant to radiator as needed while vehicle warms up. You should see bubbles coming out of radiator. Fill reservoir to between cold and hot fill lines. Replace caps when bubbling stops but before coolant temperature reaches normal operating temperature. Never remove the radiator cap until engine has fully cooled down.

Has coolant level been going down in return reservoir at all, as in have you had to add coolant recently to bring it up to top level? Have you tried running engine from cold, with heater on and let it run up to normal temperature with cap off return reservoir? If not do so, and watch level in reservoir and if it goes down, add as needed until engine running at normal, and not overheating. Allow rad fan to kick on & off a few times before re-installing cap on reservoir. Pay close attention to engine temp while doing this. If it goes high, shut it off and let cool. Be careful, my son's Passat just had overheat problem and turned out to be impeller on water pump ( internally) was spinning on shaft of pump. Thermostat is certainly a consideration if coolant is full, and all air bled out. Keep me posted on what happens when you run with cap off and keep reservoir full. Don't forget, heater on while doing this.

you could have an air pocket in the cooling system that has to be burped. With a cold engine, park uphill and leave the radiator cap loose. Fill radiator and coolant reservoir. Start engine with cap loose and run at 1500 rpm until temp gauge reads normal. Feel if top radiator return hose from engine to radiator is hot. If yes, coolant is flowing and thermostat is open. If cold, thermostat is not staying closed until engine is hot.

I have a coolant system that needs to be bled of air. How would I go about doing that?


A complete drain and refill of the cooling system at 50,000 miles (80, 000km) and afterwards at least every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 3 years will remove the accumulated rust, scale and other deposits. The recommended coolant is a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and water for year-round use. Choose a good quality antifreeze with water pump lubricants, rust inhibitors and other corrosion inhibitors, along with acid neutralizers.
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Remove the splash shield from the front of the front sub frame and body.

Before opening the radiator petcock, spray it with some penetrating lubricant.
  1. Place a suitable container under the petcock.
  2. Remove the reservoir bottle pressure cap.
  3. Attach a length of rubber hose to the draincock. This will help to direct the coolant flow into the drain pan.
  4. Drain the existing coolant by opening the radiator petcock.
  5. Close the petcock and install the splash shield.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Determine the capacity of the coolant system, then properly refill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of fresh coolant and water, as follows:
    1. Fill the reservoir bottle with coolant until it reaches the top of the cold fill mark on the bottle.
    2. Reinstall the bottle pressure cap.
    3. Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air at the A/C vents in the instrument panel.
    4. Start the engine and allow it to idle until hot air is coming from the A/C vents.

  8. If the air discharge from the A/C vents remains cool and the temperature gauge does not move, the engine coolant is low in the engine and must be filled. Turn the engine OFF , allow the engine to cool and add coolant through the reservoir bottle as described earlier and replace the cap.
  9. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Hot air should come from the A/C vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading within the normal range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch.
  10. Shut off the engine and allow it to cool.
  11. If available, install a pressure tester and check for leaks. If a pressure tester is not available, run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached (allowing the system to naturally pressurize), then check for leaks.


CAUTION If you are checking for leaks with the system at normal operating temperature, BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to touch any moving or hot engine parts. Once the temperature has been reached, shut the engine OFF, and check for leaks around the hose fittings and connections which were removed earlier.

Hello, i have a 2004 hyundai accent and my problem is that sometimes,the temp gauge will show the car getting hotter to the red.then it will slowly go back to normal.it stays normal most of the time.does...


Could be a faulty sender, but first go through the checklist following:-

1) Check engine cooling fan/s are operating as required when engine temp rises above cut-in threshold - check fan control relay is ok,
2) Check for collapsing radiator hose on suction side of water-pump when motor revs raised above idle.
3) Check coolant reservoir pressure cap is serviceable,
4) Check coolant system is properly filled - carry out any bleed off procedure specified to clear any air locks- (ensure heater core coolant flow is turned on).
5) Check condition of radiator core:-
i) for blockage of air flow to (bugs/grass etc),
ii) for core internal blockage to coolant flow,

2001 dodge stratus engine temperature gauge spikes occasionally


Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.

Fluctuating Temp gauge - '96 Ford Explorer 4.0


Have the system pressure checked. This is simple and quick. Puts the system under pressure and helps to locate leaks. Check cap too. System needs to maintain pressure.

Some engines have a "Bleed" valve in the head so you can force the air out of the system as you fill it with coolant. May want to chekc to see if yours has one.

\Fluxing gage indicates coolant sometime there and sometimes not. Low level. Sound says the same thing.

2004 Sierra 5.3 l - Engine coolant blowing out of reservoir


this was caused by the cap being gone, there is zero doubt of this, I hope u have not damaged the cylinder head gaskets, time will tell.
