also, when you try to start it, the belt on the motor moves a little bit but it seems as if something is binding it.

Are you losing coolant in this vehicle and no sign of where it is going?

If so, then the culprit is the intake manifold. Your cylinders have flooded with coolant and your engine is bound up. Remove intake manifold, dry out cylinders, install new intake manifold.

That's what happened to our 1997 Olds 88.

Sounds like the battery,or loose connection to the battery.

When you turn the key to start the car the starter does not engage.

What do you have to do to get it to crank ?
You could try cranking it in neutral to see if the neutral safety switch is acting up. It could also be a faulty relay or connection.

When turn onthe key doesnt turn on

Check power to the solenoid on the top of the starter motor when cranking. If power is available, and if the solenoid isn't clicking (operating), then replace solenoid. There is no relay for this.

The motor wont turn over i have power to everything else. i turn the key and the motor doesnt even click or attemp to turn

possible starter issue, try to lightly tap starter with hammer, be very cautious when doing so, you will damage starter if you hit it to hard, after tapping starter start car if that does not work another simple possibility is the steerwheel lock, with ignition on off possition turn steering wheel, listen for click, then turn key to start.

Car doesnt want to start. all lights come on when in the on position however when I turn it to start nothing happens it dont even try to turn over it just clicks 2002 hyundai xg350

The starting system consists of:
  • starter motor
  • starter switch, part of the ignition switch
  • starter motor solenoid relay switch
  • starter solenoid
  • starter drive
When you turn your key to start your engine, it just clicks, right? If so, more than likely this is due to a bad battery. Even though your battery may appear to be fully charged, it may have a dead cell, or worse. If you get a jump, does the vehicle start? If so, replace your battery.

Possible sources of the problem if the engine does not crank or the relay clicks:
  1. Battery
  2. Starter motor
  3. Starter motor relay
  4. Ignition switch
  5. Damaged fuse
  6. Anti-theft system
  7. Circuitry

I have a 2004 Dodge Grand caravan that won't start. (60,000 miles) I hear a clicking noise and my gauges go "crazy" when I turn the key. (Speedometer goes from 0-120 and back to zero when I turn...

Sounds like a classic case of a dead battery. It takes much less energy to sweep the gauges and turn on the lights than it does to crank the engine over. The clicking noise is usually your starter solenoid trying to engage and spin the starter. Try a new battery. Happy motoring.

Good luck.

Hi Kelly,
sounds like your battery is a bit sick. Or it could be the starter motor solenoid sticking.
The click you are hearing is probably the starter motor solenoid. If you hear a series of loud clicking its usually due to a flat battery in which case you need a jump start from another car.
If you can get someone to charge up your battery using a portable charger and the car starts OK, its a fair bet your battery is on it's way out. You can get your battery tested at any large reputable auto repair shop.
If the battery is OK, the solenoid can get stuck on your starter motor. Often a light tap with a rubber or wooden mallet can free up a stuck solenoid, but ultimately you will need a new starter motor. (BTW The solenoid is the smaller bit attached to your starter motor. There will be heavy wires attached to it) Have a look at link 1 below for more info.

One of my keys to my 2000 ford windstar broke and since then my car wont turn on with the other key that i have. Could it be some kind of anti theft system that i not letting the car turn on. I mean it has...

Some of the Ford Keys DO have an antitheft chip in them. so this may very well be your problem... If your other key doesn't have a big plastic Ford scripted head on it, then it's most likely not going to accomodate the antitheft device.
Also the "clicking sound" you mentioned, may be a simple drained battery and it's got enough power to run the lights, but when you turn the motor over it just clicks... Very typiccal forr this to happen as well. Get a jump start and see if that solves the clicking... Best of luck on this..

What causes car too start when it wants to and it seems worse when its hot outside i hear a click but doesnt alwys turn over

sound like starter motor is failing, will normally be worse when its hot, to proove it, when you hear this click, swithch the key quickly, eg... click... click... click... this can free it up, or with a 2nd person, locate the starter motor in the engine bay and give it a tap with a hammer handle or a decent stick, (just to tap it into life, not beat the hell out of it) while other person turns the key to crank.
If this works the starter motor is due for repairs
