Question about Dodge Caravan

3 Answers

My wife's 97 Dodge Grand Caravan was running fine and then it just lost power and then quit running. When I tried to restart it, it acted as if it was out of time. I pulled the codes and all that came up was the O2 sensor. Using the process of elimination, I replaced the cam sensor, the crank sensor, the coil pack, and the timing chain and gears. The chain did NOT jump time but since it was a little sloppy and I had the cover off anyhow, I replaced it. When all of this didn't work, I put in an rebuilt ECM. From what I have read, the basic timing is programmed into the ECM and once the engine starts the input of various sensors effects the timing. Could the rebuilt ECM be programmed for the wrong engine? Her van has a 3.3 liter engine. Also, the fuel pump and injectors are working. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob

I have repair manuals but this problem seems unusual. In the 60's, I used to build and race cars.

As I stated in the original request, the engine is cranking. There is spark and the fuel injectors are operating normally. The problem is that the spark and fuel is not happening at the right time---hence the timing is off.

I scanned the computer for codes and the only one there was for the O2 Sensor---which will not prevent the car from starting. The compression is good and the van was running perfectly up until it quit. I have fuel, spark, and the engine turns over---it just won't start.

HI...
One of the first step.
Check compression on each of the cylinders.
Before you spend money in other things.

The ECM. Must be programed with the VIN of your vehicle.
But.. My question is The van start and run for a few seconds.
If yes. You need to program the ECM. with the right VIN.
If not. just crank or doing nothing.

If just Crank and the compression is good. with a Spark tester
Check if there spark a any of the spark plugs.
if not. Check the all the connections. Coil connector.
Crank,cam.map. and auto shutdown relay.
The best recomend is try to get the car Scanned with a computer diagnostic.. And see what codes you have.
If the computer is wrong programed the scanner will show code for that. Normally in all chrysler cars.

Ok. I hope this help to try resolve your problem.
Thank's for use fixya.

I recomend check the fuel pressure,

REmove the Crank sensor and see if there any evidence of damage due to the FLYWHEEL.

Remenber the Crank sensor is located Between the engine and transmission housing.

Check if you don't put the timing on the crank shaft 180 degrees

compared with the camshaft. Remenber the crank turn 2 times while the cam just one.. if you have 180 degrees of diffrent don't work. OK...

Hello,
There could be enourmous reasons for not turning on!!..Did u check the ignition fuse??..As far as if its EPM..Then is There an injector pulse??..Is it Cranking??..If theres no Spark,Then it is the EPM Surely...There is a half moon shaped part there that is made of plastic. When the part cracks and you turn the key, it will feel like it's working normally, whereas the actual switch does not get activated because the half moon part will absorb the turning....Thank you!!

Regards!!!...

Yeah exactly the change in timing of spark and fuel injector could be possibly due to the wrongly programmed EPM..So kindly check it...

    Kind Regards!!..

97 dodge grand caravan 3.3 L no power to fuel inj and fuel pump engine runs fine on starting fluid. Eatx relay seems to be the problem

If it runs fine on starting fluid, then it points to a fuel pump or circuit being bad.

Good luck.

Air conditioning on '97 Dodge Caravan 3.0L not working. No power to compressor.

Wait until you get it full, then see what it does.Could just be freon running through evaporator, and air. Once full & run a while, it may stop, if not, your AC will probably quit cooling again, then you'll know.

'97 dodge grand caravan engine is off and there is a fan like noise still on? what could this be?

That would be the cooling fans which do tend to run a minute or two after engine shuts off.
This is nothing to worry about and is quite normal, unless it runs for a very long time and runs down the battery. In this case, the fan relay should be replaced.
