I tend to agree with your pops, valve guides can transmit oil down the valve stems when engine sits stationary for while, it usually is inlet valves, when the stem seals become worn or brittle.
This is a very common fault on many types of overhead valve engines as oil pools around the valves and gravity does the rest!
