Question about 1995 Ford Contour

2 Answers

The car stalls at idle and when stopping.

My contour will stall at idle and when coming to a stop. The mass air flow sensor has been replaced and the car will not run with it plugged in. I am at a loss as to what to look for.

Your issue will likely be the I.A.C (Idle air controll valve) Located on the side of the intake, Thats what controlls the air flow for idle purposes, Where as the M.A.F (Mass air flow) handels Forced (Mass) air

Sounds to me like an O2 sensor, i had a similar problem with my Ford Probe GT. Luckily my car was a 5 speed so i just kept my foot on the gas a bit and put my car into neutral as i was slowing down or coming to a stop. If you're car is automatic I would not suggest doing neutral drops.. you'll cause more damage.

02 sensor plays no roll in idle performance, It monitors exuast fumes before the convertor and after the convertor to decide that proper emission fumes are spent within the convertor

Mass air flow sensor is probably going bad or has fouled from bad air from lack of maintain a clean air filter and filter box, or is sucking foul air into the system after the air filter.

Idle speed too low

Sounds like you may have an issue with your idle air control or your mass air flow sensor. The IAC can cause a vehicle to stall when up to temperature, especially when warmer outside.I would clean or replace that for starters.

Car barely holds an idle and sometimes stalls when coming to a stop

There could be several causes for your stalling problem.
  • Bad plugs
  • Bad wires
  • Clogged fuel injectors
  • Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  • Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
A basic tuneup would rule out the plugs and wires. Fuel injector cleaner will clear most clogged injectors. Once ruled out (or if the car is running smooth apart from stalling at a stop) the most common problems are MAF and TPS.
The TPS in particular regulates idling speed under all conditions. Included in this would be while the engine is warm. If your car wants to stall unless your foot is on the gas, I'd lean toward the TPS.

This might be the mass air flow sensor or egr valve.

My Subaru?

I would say that the sensor may be bad the only other thing that i can think of is that the PCM lost its idle settings. then it is trying to relearn the idle setting and adjusting for the air sensor and/or the O2 sensor.
