1992 toyota pick up dilemma

Greetings, I have a 1992 toy p.u. that i've had for five years now and have always had a power problem. I purchased this truck form the original owner- supposedly, and the od. stated 54,000 miles. The engine compartment looked like a bomb had gone off under the hood- filthy! Since my purchase, i've had to replace the timing chain and gear, overhaul the transmission, replace the head due to excessive oil consumption, (valve guides), and my mechanic says the engine compression is good.
I just came back from a trip in the mountains and came close to just driving it off the cliff due to lack of power still! Everything from bugs to busses passed me up the grade! I had to drive in 3rd @ 4000rpms to maintain 45 mph. 4th gear is a dog. When it comes to hills, this truck loses all power. Its a 5spd manual, 22re, and I should mention that it has a noticeable sluggish hesitation between 2nd and 3rd, at around 2-3000 rpms.
My mechanic says it's running fine, but I know better, I guess, since i've had friends in the past who have owned these same trucks and they flew!
Please help  if you can before I end up selling only to realize it might have been a relatively inexpensive repair to make it run well. Regards- -Bob

Bob,
I have worked on a lot of 22re's it dosen't sound to me like it runs fine you said that you had the timing chain changed. Has this problem been there since, if so here are a few solutions. First your timing could be off on the chain it also could be the timing of your distribitor, best thing to do it to get a timing light and check it. Also you might want to try to have your injectors spray tested this also could be the issue, but it counds to me more like a timing issue.

Excessive white smoke from exhaust 1992 cressida

I found this on the internet. I've used the product for years re performance and fuel reduction purposes. It may help others.
From Toyota forum post:
"I have an 07 Camry Le with the 2.4 L oil burner. I added this oil treatment called Eco-Tek and it stopped burning oil! My gas mileage also improved from an average of approx 9.0L per 100k to 8.3L per 100k with a mix of city and highway also noticed a pick up in power that even my wife noticed clip_image001.png. The website is listed below with more info."

1992 toy pu ac clutch not engaging, it trys but does not spin cuasing the belt to burn

Common when the clutch has gone out. Those are usually not serviceable. Replace the compressor unit, they almost always come with a new clutch/pully fully assembled. It will be recommended you replace the evaporator and accumulator tube for your warranty on the new compressor. Total cost on parts with R134 recharge kit is usually around $300. Not too bad of a do-it-yourself job.

Please vote if this helps!! Thanks, MIke
