You must be certain that the tank is empty, the gauge is not always accurate. if it is empty, than the pick-up assembly in the tank is not sested properly or the intake part of the fuel pump is broken. It sounds like you should drop the fuel tank and inspect the fuel pump end of the system, just don't smoke while doing this.

Why is there no fuel returning to my fuel tank

23 psi is no where near enough to run let alone get past the regulator so no gas will return to the tank. Need 40 to 50 psi to run. So either you have a fuel leak could be in the tank or a line. Or the pump is junk

Most probably if you take out your gas pump/sending unit assembly out of your fuel tank you will find a broken fuel hose on the assembly. The actual pump rests in the bottom of the tank with hoses running to the top of the pump / sending unit assembly. It is probably broken around the 1/2 tank mark. When fuel level is higher than the break in the hose, everything runs fine, but once fuel level reaches under the break, the pump starts pushing fuel out of the break back into the tank and the engine does not recieve enough fuel pressure to run.

F-250 FUEL PROBLEM

Hi, My brothers 250 had the same problem and is now fixed. The fuel pump in each tank has a check valve that allows the fuel to run in one direction only. When this valve fails to close fuel runs into that tank when the other pump is running. We replaced the pump and all is well. Dan
