Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Help! Ty for the very informative answer. So r u saying the repair will cost 1000's? I am a single Mum and I dont have that kind of money. I'm afraid to go to a Ford dealer cuz they always overprice everything. Is this a part I can buy at an auto parts store? Btw, my power mirrors, wipers, and power locks all work. Thanks so much 4 ur help.

I am really sorry, I am not trying to scare you, the dealer is not over priced, they have to train techs and keep 100's of thousand's of dollars worth of special tools and test equip on hand to fix problems like yours, the module is called the GEM, they can run a "Quick Test" of the systems and the GEM module, and then give you a good estimate of the cost, then based on their findings you can have the repair done elsewhere. I would guess one hour of labor to do the "Quick Test" on the Gem (Generic Electronic Module), would you like to call me and discuss this? Dennis Phone #925-577-7157. What did I buy? I purchased a 2000 Ford Taurus in early April found on Craigslist that my father insisted was a sound car. Even though there's a miss in the engine ( spark plugs are easy to do but he again...

I'm not sure what kind of "cylinder problem" would cost you $450. If you need a valve job or full engine rebuild it would cost you much more. The only thing I can think of in that price range might be a faulty fuel injector. Try adding some fuel injector cleaner to a tank of gas, and maybe try running a tank or two of premium through, as well. If the problem is a dirty injector, this might clear it up (and costs very little). Changing spark plugs is also a much cheaper option to try. Running it 5 miles a day with a miss for a couple of weeks shouldn't hurt anything. The garage you talked to may very well be honest, but some places will still (unfairly) assume that a woman is an easy target to rip off.

Check engine light came on when getting gas and they say that it will cost 1200.00 tofix I don't have that kind of money. please help!

most repair shops are out to make a profit and steal everybodys money. " who has money now days" im on disability and have not got a cola for 2 years. but gas food etc is going up. the best thing to do is go to any auto parts store and they will scan car for free. to find problem code. as long as light is still on. then go from there. or repost! have a good day !!

I have a 65 ford mustang, perfect conditions, however i think its time for a check up, but i dont know where to take it and im afraid of the cost

If you've got a 65 Mustang in perfect condition, don't worry about the cost. The car's worth more than you think! I'd find a classic car club to jion and ask other members who they trust. Many of them won't answer but a few will. Otherwise, check your local BBB for car repair shops with good ratings.

Unfortunately this is how they make there money, have you got any paperwork for this car, ie a service manual or user manual in a wallet or folder somewhere in the car, if so look through it and maybe the code has been written down on a card or piece of paper, Colin.

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu & was side swiped a few months ago. After this accident my turn signals sometimes work & sometimes they don't. We have checked the fuses and the light bulbs & all...

Failure of the Multifunction Switch (Turn Signal Switch) is relatively common and will cause the lighting problems you are describing. This failure probably has absolutely nothing to do with the vehicle being side-swiped.

The warning chime going off could be caused by a bad door switch or a loose connection in the door wiring.

As far as replacing the vehicle, nobody can answer that question but you. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is the car paid for? If so, are you willing to bite off a monthly payment?
  2. Would a monthly payment be cheaper than the monthly average of what you are spending on this car?
  3. Does the anual cost of maintenance and repairs exceed the bluebook value of the car?
Do not count collision repair costs - you want an average of what the car is costing you "collision-free". (Collision repairs will run up the price of a brand new car as well, if you wreck it.)

Do add in any additional costs of providing insurance for a financed vehicle.(Usually as much as 2 times the cost of a car that is paid-for)

Make sure you look at the BIG picture before writing off your old car. It is almost always cheaper to maintain the old one than it is to buy a new one if the vehicle is being maintained properly.

Air Flow Sensor on TDI

Sorry the solution already posted didn't really have any answer. This is a pretty open forum, and anyone can put an answer up.....

Back to your problem.

I have a 2000 Jetta TDI, I get anywhere from 47-50 mpg.

Many things could cause your symptoms so solving here isn't really possible. But there are ways to work with this and other VW's.

You can buy a software that will let you work with the onboard computers (all of them, not just the engine). Cost is about $350. You do need a laptop (or desktop PC if you want to just use it in the garage.) This product is nearly the equivalent of the device VW uses in its dealerships.

There is great tech support for this product, and a users group on Yahoo. If you post the diagnostic information and ask for help, you will
get answers.

It sounds like either your repair shop doesn't know about this software, or they haven't asked the right questions.

The product is called VCDS, and you can find information about it at:
