1994 ford aerostar:With electronic dashboard, periodically with no pattern the speedometer cuts out. Some times it comes back on most often does not. External high temperatures seem to effect it. Car runs with no speedometer but at high speed OD does not kick in so rpms are high. Sometimes the speed will kick in and engine will stutter effected by the reading of speed. I've changed the speed sensor on differential as well as the harness. I've been told it might be the cluster but I don't understand that.

I have the same problem, however temperature does not seem to be a factor. Beside the bouncing of the speedo, the the trans drops out of gear as if it is in neutral. When I drop it into 2nd and and drive about 1/2 mile the back into drive it'll go about 10 miles and then the same thing happens.

On my 96 the PSOM module went bad. That is located on the back of the instrument cluster. Mine is analog not digital. What was happening was that the PSOM (Programable Speedometer Odometer Module) would mess up and the speedometer would jump all over the place. The tranmission is electronic and the computer would adjust and shift depending on the speed reported by the speedometer. The van would **** and shake. At slower speeds it was much better. I changed the speed sensor first without success. Changed the instument cluster and all was well.

The speedometer bounces and sometimes does'nt work at all, and odometer hasn't changed sametime

Right off the bat it sounds like a broken speedometer cable. As the cable spins from the gearing of the transmission it is clicking against the broken part of the cable running to the speedometer gauge. The frictional clicking is what's causing your needle to bounce around. Since the cable is probably broken and cannot spin long enough to move the odometer numbers. Raise your vehicle safely and disconnect the speedometer from the transmission. then see if you can pull the cable out of the housing. If only a portion of the cable comes out, then that should answer your question. Be careful when you disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission as not to lose any small pieces that cause the drive mechanism to work.

Speedometer quit working then started bouncing and truck is cutting in and out now what would cause this

Sounds like a bad alternator or ground in electrical system. Check all body grounds and your voltage and amps

Speedometer bounces from current speed down to zero (where it sometimes sticks)

It won't be a cable, as it's impossible for a cable driven speedo to perform this way.
It's an electronic speedo.

Check and/or replace the speedo sensor in the gearbox housing.

My speedometer quit working and i replaced it and it still doesnt work \

check the connection that is on the transmission if you have a real cable then check the end to make sure the cable connections are not broke. look at the speedometer then spin the cable with your fingers the speedometer should bounce if not then cable is broke also check the ends usuall the end by the trans gets stripped out. a speed sensor will also make the meter not work if you have that kind of vehical.

Sounds like a broken speedometer cable. The bounce around erratically, because the cable is still connected under the hood and still spinning. Even though its broken the two ends make contact and still causes some movement of the speedometer.

Usually runs from the transmission through the firewall and into the back of the gauge cluster.

1995 honda accord speedometer and odometer not working

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.
