Re: Hand brake needs adjusting where is the adjuster
After a brake job pressing the brake pedal causes a meal on metal click seemingly from the forward of fire wall. After driving for a few miles the sound will not duplicate until it cools down.

slacken off the hand brake cable adjuster , jack up rear wheels adjust read brake shoes till brakes lock ,then back off till brake are free to spin wheels pull hand brake leaver up three clicks, adjust hand brake cable till brakes just start to bind, release hand brake leaver , wheel should spin freely .
Your better off adjusting the hand brake at the wheel. When were the rear brakes last serviced? If adjustment is needed it's usually a sign the rear brakes are worn and considering the age of the vehicle possibly the cables are stretched.
If Disc brakes jack up wheels , make sure the cable is not binding or frozen , pull hand leaver on three clicks, adjust cable till brakes just start to bind, release hand brake and check the wheels are free to turn. Drum brake check cables are free, back off cable till slack, check lining to drum adjusters are free and adjust if need be, pull hand brake on three clicks, adjust cable so brakes just start to bind release hand brake and make sure the wheels are free to turn ,
self adjusting action of the brakes only applies to the foot brake action for the shoes. hand brake is adjusted by cable adjustment or cable at the hand brake lever adjustment
I have not checked a kia carnival but worked on most kia cars. There are two hand brake adjustments. One is at the hand brake lever. open up the hand brake cover and look for the nut adjuster where the end of the hand brake cable is attached to. Tighten up that nut until you find a comfortable hand brake position and the brakes locks.
the other adjustment is found at the rear brake drums. you have to remove the tires and tighten the adjusting nut behind the brake plates. there is a small hole, usually covered with a rubberized plug. remove that plug and adjust the brake with a flat screwdriver.
OK, if the hand brake is too high and is not holding the car on a hill, then the rear brakes should be adjusted. If the brakes in the rear are adjusted tightly, the hand brake should return to normal operation. If not, then the cable will have to be shortened by twisting the adjusting nut (or screws) to tighten due to a stretched cable.
You need to adjust your hand brake (e-brake) you will usually find the adjustment bolt under the console between the front seats, or under the dash, depending on the type of hand brake you have. it looks like two cables going to a crossbar then single cable from the crossbar to the hand brake. at the end of the cross bar will be a nut that you use to adjust the hand brake (make sure you hand brake is off before adjusting it)
Try to adjust the rear brakes tighter at the shoes, if you have drum brakes. May require taking the drum off and adjusting the adjuster. Or, adjusting it from the backing plate access hole if there is one.
Be sure to check the cables to make sure they are not broken anywhere between the hand brake lever and the back brakes.
Using a brake adjusting gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.
Compare the brake drum measurement to the brake shoes.
Adjust the brake shoes by inserting a brake adjustment tool into the knurled quadrant of the rear quad operating lever and adjust the shoes to the same measurement as the brake drum.
Install the brake drum.
Install the wheel and tire assembly.
Lower the vehicle.
Check the brake system operation by making several stops while driving slowly forward.
I recommend you get a Haynes repair manual on your vehicle as there are several adjustments you may need to look at. If this is the first time you have had this problem and have less than 50,000 miles on the brake pads then it is most likely the cable and there are a couple of places to adjust in most cases. If you have 50,000 or more miles on those read pads you may need to replace the rear brake pads. The manual will help you in doing this repair correctly.
there is an adjusting screw atached to the hand brake cable located near the hand brake it self but before i do that i would check and replace the rear padds first and replace if needed! that could be the reason why your hand brake needs adjustment???
The handbrake lever is too high when applied. How do you adjust it back to a lower postion? I have no haynes manual!
