Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

Thanks! and another question?

Thanks Pyrhyc, I recently had the transmission flush and the oil changed at Jiffy Lube. Is it possible that the wiring to these sending units may have been disturbed during that service? Are the sending units close to either of the areas in question?

Thanks again for the quick response! The vehicle is actually the 2004 GMC Envoy XUV. I didnt see this option in the vehicle list so I picked the closest one. The instruments appear to be all in one or an "instrument cluster". I appreciate your help as I am off work today and am trying to find a fix as quickly as possible. I am going to check the transmission for a broken or loose connector right away! Thanks again..

Thanks again Pyrhyc... I tried to locate the speedo and or the oil sending unit... No luck on either one!!! This engine is the Vortec 4200 straight six cylinder and it really is buried in wire and plastic covers... I went under the vehicle to check the trans and it has a very strange offset drive due to the 4 wheel drive and the long engine.. Needless to say there are ALOT of electrical plugs and wires there. I could not distinguish which one may be the speedo. I also tried to find the oil pressure sending unit and found 2 different connectors that I thought might be it(one just above the oil filter and one near the top front of the engine passenger side) I disconnected each, one at a time and started the engine but did not loose my oil pressure reading(which appears to be working normally now) AAARRRRGGGGHHH....Any way I do appreciate your help and suggestions. I am now going to try and find an engine specific manual or something to see where the oil sending unit is and see if I can even get to it!

With the tranny flush, yes. It's possible that they may have knocked the connection loose or broke it at the sending unit. The unit is usually located on the side near the bottom ot the tranny. With the oil change I'm going to say no. The oil sending unit is generally located on the driver side, center of the engine block near or under the exhaust manifold, or on the front of the block towards the top. Unless they moved them on me, it shouldn't be anywhere close to the drain plug on the oil pan, and there no way that they should get near the oil sending unit when changing the oil, unless the sending unit is near the oil filter, and GMC generally doesn't put the two near each other for this reason. Just thought of something. Are the gages individually replaceable, or are they all built into one display unit?

If the instrument panel is an all in one, these work off a central control board built into the cluster or panel. If the board has malfunctioned on these two gages, then unfortunately, the entire cluster will need to be replaced. If this is the case, I recommend your local salvage yard, or an on line locator for parts at salvage yards nationwide. This item is expensive at a dealer!!!

If you're going to buy a manual, I suggest a Haynes or chilton, you can get them at any automotive parts store, and it will be the best $20 investment on your Envoy. It will have the exact location for the units and the color of the wire. I prefer the chilton, it's more user friendly, but both are fine manuals.

Engine Flush.

I get ask this question a lot. Should I do an engine flush? The answer to that is NO! If you have your vehicle serviced at a quick change lube, they will push services like this to you, especially if your a woman. Jiffy Lube is notorious for doing this. Every automotive manufacturer will state in their warranty, if you do this, they will void the warranty simply because it will cause a major engine failure. Over time sludge and deposits build up in an engine, when you flush it, it breaks up these deposits and they settle in the oil pan. Even when you drain the oil and place a new oil filter on, some of these broken up deposits remain in the engine plugging up the oil lube ports. This stops oil from properly lubing vital parts inside the engine causing engine failure. Products like engine flush are known as snake oils in the automotive repair business. The best and safe way to stop sludge build up or remove it, is to use a good quality synthetic oil and quality oil filter. This will end your sludge problem over time. One more thing, avoid quick change lube centers, any of them no matter if it's EZ- Lube, Jiffy Lube, Wal-Mart and on and on. The people working there are not automotive techs, the have not went to collage or have a degree in automotive technology. No one with a degree in automotive technology is going to be working at a quick lube center for minimum wage, they will be working in a good independent service center or dealership making $22 or more per hour. For more information on this, go to youtube and search Jiffy Lube Scam. There are tons of news story video's on all of these centers.

How many miles should a driver go between oil changes?

Since the oil is more refined and filters are better these days (I would recommend Fram 3X or 6X filters), I go 5000 miles between changes. If your 2007 is up in the 80K-90K mileage range, you might want to look at the high-mileage oil as a substitute. You might also want to look at synthetic oil, which can stay in your engine even longer. As far as Jiffy lube or the dealership, not having used either, my best guess would be the Jiffy lube is faster and cheaper, but the dealership probably has better trained people doing the work and will check your car to make sure nothing else is wrong, while you are there.

ENGINE KNOCKS AND CHATERS AFTER OIL CHANGE - JIFFY LUBE PUT 5W30 OIL IN ENGINE.

You did not mention the year make and model, but unless it is a diesel I doubt the weight of oil would do it.
I would take it back as quick as possible before it locks up.
You have checked to make sure the oil level is full, right ?

Got oil change done at Jiffy Lube. I got my transmission flushed & refilled last month. Now Jiffy Lube is saying I got a little transmission leak caused by wear & tear. How much you think it should...

unfortunately sometimes when you get the engine or transmission flushed it can cause an oil leak I don't know what it will cost but I would be getting other quotes & get the work done at the cheapest quote, it pays to shop around........hope this helps......cheers.

How do i change transmission fluid in 06 sedona

Honestly your best bet is to take it to jiffy lube or some similar franchise as they will flush the transmission as well.

Extension shock deteched

Take it to your local Honda Dealer, sounds like your missing a little retainer clip for the shock. They may have to order it next day.

I would submit any bill you get back to the Jiffy Lube Corp Office for reinbursement.

In the future, I recomend staying away from Jiffy/Express/Quick Lube places, google search, there are just to many cases of them out right ripping people off. From putting in the wrong oils to hard selling improper services.

Do not allow any of these places to replace your Honda's transmission Fluid with GM Dexron III or "Flushthe Transmission". This can void your warranty and damage your transmission. Once again, Google or search MSN for "flushing Honda Transmissions".

Honda's use ATF-Z1, not General Motors Dexron III. And your Odyssey should have 05w20 engine oil, not 05w30 or something else. Check your Owners Manual for more details.

I am not saying you have to take your Honda to a Honda Dealer for all your services, though any many cases it is my first choice. Look for a ASE Certified Master Tech run shop and one that works only on Honda/Acura's. They should have the right tools, right parts and the knowledge to use them correctly.

Good Luck.

1998 MAZDA 626 OIL LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTANTLY JIFFY LUBE TRIED TO TELL ME THAT IT IS BEACAUSE OF ENGINE SLUDGE BUILD UP AND THEY COULD FLUSH THE ENGINE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, I'M NOT BUYING...

not that I buy all that jiffylube sells, but with that year model it is possible.

But it is something that you should beable to fix yourself.

Buy a can of Berryman B-12 (any autoparts or wal-mart) and add to your oil prior to an oil change. (about 10-15 minutes) DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH THIS IN OIL.

Do the oil change as usual and see if that doesn't help you out.

This is a 3.00 oil flush...verses their 25.00 one

I recommend that you do this everyother time you change the oil to help control the buildup in the engine....
