Picture is small and I can't enlarge, but it looks like it. I can't get the little cap (#1) off to access any of the retainers

  • Anonymous Mar 05, 2011

Is the little cap #1 threaded perhaps?

I'm having a problem getting the little cap off my '89 dodge ram 50 4wd hub to replace the left front half shaft. Is it epoxy'd on? I need this off to access retainers.

Use 3 wheel nuts in order to attach the J 42129 to the wheel bearing/hub.
Use the J 42129 in order to push the wheel drive shaft out of the wheel bearing/hub.
(often times the drive shaft will push out of the hub with only hand pressure - the older and more rust on it, the more likely you are to need the tool to overcome the rust)
Remove and DISCARD the wheel bearing/hub bolts. Remove the J 42129 from the hub.
Important: Ensure that the wheel drive shaft outer seal/boot is not damaged.
Remove the wheel bearing/hub and splash shield-noting the position of the shield for re-installation.

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4 wheel drive. I

i have found that you need to first make sure the cv shaft is moving free in the bearing. soak everything with penitrating oil. you should be able to move shaft in & out a little. the hub is a very tight fit. you need to tap it some from side to side untill you see a little gap between hub and spindel. then place the head of a flat screw driver in that gap and all around the hub, prying back and forth where ever possible. soak, tap and pry all over. be hard on it if replacing, more gentle if not. good luck.

Front axel/hub

the hub is seized into stering knuckle..you can try putting a socket or a small 1/2" drive extension between 1 ear of front axle shaft and axle housing and turning wheels all the way to whatever side you have socket in..this will push hub out of knuckle..try doing this both ways with engine running..keep axle nut on shaft

Growling coming from front differential

There's not really a best way. If the axle half shafts bolt to the housing just drop it right out. If not you'll have to remove both half shafts from the wheel hub. Disconnect the drive shaft, and drop it out.

Remove front axle from differential on 2003 dodge ram

That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings

Replace front u joints

I had to remove the R/F hub assembly to replace the U-Joints -It requires a lot of force on the hub assembly generally requiring replacement of the hub assembly if it does not want to cooperate. So be prepared to replace it if necessary.

I had to purchase a large hub puller from Snap-on tools-it bolts up to the hub and the shaft is driven in at the axle shaft it was effective after a lot of pounding and heating. Which resulted (as I stated above )
with replacement of the hub assembly.

Thanks MJ
