Service engine soon light is on. car is running perfect, but it wouldn't fill up with gas. only took 3/4 of tank. car has low mileage and one owner. most mileage is on parkways.

the cap most likely set an evap code in the computer have it checked with a scan tool.if the cap is on tight then just clear the code and the light will go out.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON light has nothing to do with overheating or leaks ! OBD2 - emissions . DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the PCM / ECM - engine computer . Probably a sensors or emission problem . Take an have it checked .

funny that you mention ' Dark Matter ' -- there is a possibility that you might have water contamination in the tank (?), you can try and get some gas additives that remove water from the fuel. also, there is the possibility that fuel pick up line has been damaged and is not getting fuel from as low in the tank as it use to.

The fact that the light came on has nothing to do with filling your tank. The light is pre-programmed to come on following a combination of time, mileage and on some makes the usage profile, and it's telling you to get the engine serviced soon. After the service, the vehicle will need to be connected to a suitably-equipped computer to have the service light indicator reset. If you check in your Cadillac owners' handbook, the service section will give you details of which service items need to be attended to at the age and mileage of your vehicle. If it's just a simple oil and filters service then you may decide that you can do this yourself easily and save money. If there's more to the job, you can decide what you're comfortable doing yourself and then get a garage to do the rest: the less you leave to the garage, the lower the bill.

Ignoring the light will simply mean that your engine eventually has a breakdown which can be extremely expensive.

First, add coolant to your reservoir and radiator if needed. (Should turn "Low Coolant" light off) Second, go to Advanced Auto, ask for a OBD II meter to clear the "Service Engine Soon" light (Their free to use). Third, might have water in your gas tank. Get some "HEET" and put it in your gas tank. Until the water is gone, you might have to clear the light more than once.

The fuel level sensor is at fault and is setting the service engine soon light on. Your local Nissan dealer can repair this under warranty depending on your mileage. The fuel tank will need to be removed to access the sending unit.

the fuel level sending unit might be shot. mine went out and every time the gauge hit 1/4 tank the needle dropped. its a $80 part, simple to fix yourself if you are out of warranty otherwise they will try to nab i with a $280 bill that includes changing the fuel pump which is not required.

Most of the time this lite goes off based on mileage. usually oil change is very near or overdue. depending what year you hit gas 3 times and hold unti it goes away, after Key on engine off. engine cannot be running and wait for chime to stop. make sure doors are closed as well.

I have the exact same problem it took awhile before I figured it out.This car requires the medium octane gasoline .The 87 octane gas causes the engine to run on the lean side and triggers the "service engine soon light".By putting in a higher octane gas (middle range 92 octane) the light won't come on.Or you can get your service mechanic to set a richer gas mix for your car,however you'll lose about 2-3 mpg .
