Question about Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

1994 Mitsu,Galant, 4cyl.Automatic. Hello and thank you for your assistance. Since the engine rear main seal is a full circle (not 2 halves)does that mean I have to remove the auto.trans. to replce the rear main oil seal. If not how do I accomplish this. I can not get hold of a manual. Regards - Steven Spiteri (Sydney Aust.)

Hi steve
Yes you have to pull out the trans, take the flex plate off and the rear main seal is there,be very carefull when getting it out not to damage where the seal runs or where it seals on the outside, little tip put some grease around outside and inside of seal when putting in it will slide in easier and make sure its even all the way around when its sitting in and you wont have a drama.
I hope this helps good luck.

Rear seal- 1994 dodge caravan. 3.3 liter V6 automatic

Well to change out a rear main seal on any engine isn't an easy task on that one through a shop probabley 6 hours of labor or so,shop rates vary but I would say labor alone to be at least $250.00-$350.00 and for the seals and gaskets probabley $50.00-$75.00 so if a shop does it your bill should be about $300.00 min.and $425.00 max.

My car has a worn out engine rear seal how can I replace it?

This is a fun one. You can do this 2 different ways. One of which, remove the transmission and flexplate (automatic trans.) or flywheel (manual trans.) and you can loosen the rear main cap and pull the old rear main seal out and install the new one. The other way of replacing it is removing the engine and replacing the seal on an engine stand. Either way, it'll take some time to do.

How do i take out a rear main seal?

Remove the transmission, after holding the rear of the engine supported, using a jack with a piece of wood between it and the engine. Remove the clutch and pressure plate, and the flywheel or if automatic, the flex plate. The rear main seal retainer will then be exposed. Remove the 2 oil pan to main seal retainer assembly, and the bolts circling the retainer, and slide the retainer assembly unit back off the crankshaft. Remove the old gasket from the retainer, and clean the gasket ridge before installing a new gasket. It's a one piece hard rubber gasket, which must be inserted in the retainer evenly. This can be done on a work bench, or flat wood on a concrete floor, Some light oil might help it seat easier, Once seated slide the retainer containing the new gasket back over the rear of the crankshaft, A rubber hammer will help ease it back into position, Replace all bolts, not forgetting the oil pan to retainer bolts, and reinstall all parts in reverse order of removal. If a manual trans, this would be an excellent time to install a new clutch kit.

1994 nissan quest crankshaft rear main seal removal

u don't have to remove the engine however you must remove the transmission and flywheel, you will also need the Nissan special tool to install the new full circle seal or it will leak.

Rear main seal is leaking on a Ford Mustang 2003 V-6

In order to replace the rear main seal u have to pull the transmission out to access it, u will need a special seal installer tool to install the new rear main "full circle seal", it u don't use the special ford tool the seal will leak again, also if there is a groove worn ion the crankshaft the crank must be repaired or replaced or the or the seal will leak again, so this is avery diff job, a 9 on the scale of 1-10 with 10 being the mos difficult.

Rear main seal

THE REAR MAIN IS WHAT IS CALLED A FULL CIRCLE SEAL, SO YES THE TRANS AND FLYWHEEL MUST BE REMOVED, U WILL ALSO NEED THE SPECIAL FORD SEAL INSTALLER, WITHOUT IT THE SEAL WILL MOST LIKELY LEAK SOONER AFTER INSTALLATION.

There are only two paths for oil there. The rear main, and a oil galley plug a little higher up, about 2 o'clock.
