tip

My car does not shift in second gear.

Hi.

The first thing to do is replacing the transmission fluid. Metal debris inside the transmission box gets mixed with fluid and can cause similar problems.

The automatic transmission uses throttle position sensor to determine position and opening of throttle.
IF throttle position sensor is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic control module, that is energizing a set of solenoids to shift into gears.
The control module is a rectangular box, often located behind the dash and wired to transmission. The solenoids are attached to valve body, inside transmission.

If a solenoid is defective, or if control module is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

Problems concerning transmission control module, TPS and transmission solenoid are usually detectable reading fault codes stored on the car main control module (ECU/ECM).

Transmission problems are often returning a code p0700 after an OBDII scan.

Stored codes can be retrieved using an OBD scan reader.
If the car auto transmission is not shifting into gear, talk to the mechanic about the problem.
Only when the car has a really high mileage, or when there is a factory problem there is need to replace the gearbox.
A damaged gear box at low mileage is rather unusual.

Both error codes you have are transmission related. P0736 is an error for reverse has wrong gear ratio. P0700 is a general transmission problem code

Which fuse is the one for the 4/4 switch on the 2001 ranger xlt

All fuses supply power to the four wheel drive control module , the control module supplies power to mode select switch . The 4WD control module accomplishes shifts by interpreting inputs from the following:
  • mode select switch (MSS)
  • vehicle speed signal
  • encoder plate position
  • brake pedal switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor
  • ignition switch
  • transfer case shift motor
  • Based on these inputs, the 4WD control module controls the shifts into 2WD, 4WD HIGH or 4WD LOW with the following outputs:
    • shift motor (clockwise)
    • shift motor (counterclockwise)
  • Fuses
  • Battery junction box (BJB) fuse:
    • 1 (50A)
    • 3 (50A)
    • 13 (20A)
    • 30 (10A)
  • Central junction box (CJB) fuse:
    • 28 (7.5A) (manual transmission)
    • 10 (7.5A)
    • 11 (7.5A)
    • 5 (15A)
    • If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu.

1995 Oldsmobile cutlass ciera automatic transmission not shifting(109,500 miles, 3.1 liter V6). The three shift Solenoids were replaced, all under dash fuses were checked, the ECM/ECU was replaced. Fluid...

I would say to go to Autozone.com and register your vehicle for free wiring and fuse box diagrams.

Then do a dedicated search of the diagnostic plug to the ECM. There is also the possibility of a bad Torque converter.

There should be a pressure port the mechanic can test to see what the Torque converter is doing. Before the shift solenoids can work, they need pressure to turn the transmission. The Torque converter will likely not show up on an electric test, except for its Lockup device. The Torque Converter is simply a Hydraulic pump that needs to work for the transmission to turn normally.
