The "tip" that goes into transmission is too short. Trick to fix, take a razor, cut about 3/4 " out of a section of outer shield somewhere forward of trans connector. (without cutting cable inside) then press remaining shield ends together and seal with good E tape, Then slide cable into trans and tighten.

My 1968 chevy impala wont start unless i push gas pedal to the floor

it is your carburetor the fuel float is set to high and probably leaks. If it older than 10yrs old and has never been rebuilt . do that if you want to save yourself a bunch of time and little more money make the investment of a Brand New not rebuilt. if you get the carb manufactor specs matched to your motor , Out of the box, it will be very close to being on the money .

Fuel lines

Sorry I'm not a car expert, but I imagine its a pretty simple task, my father has worked in cars all hes life - but I don't want to bother hes vacation with car problems for a while.

well read here
http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularmaintenance/ss/fuel_filter.htm

You can ask another expert make sure one has cars labeled in the expertise field or contact a local tech if you can't get it fixed yourself.

again, I imagine its a simple process but I've never yet done one.

Thanks,
Ekse
