Is it possible to do a tune up on my 2003 hyundai sonota without extensive car mechanic experience. I just got the car and havent familiarized myself with the engine. I just dont know if there's anything I could really mess up. Would I be better off taking the car to a machanic or is it a fairly simple job.

There is no band adjustment procedure on the 2001 Sonata. Fluid replacement is no guarantee of repair. First of all, have you checked the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) for any DTC's? (Diagnostic Trouble Codes). Has the "Check Engine" light come on when this problem occurs? If so, find an OBDII scanner and check the system for any trouble codes. It may not be what you suspect... it could simply be a defective fluid temperature sensor or a solenoid which has gone bad - these can be replaced without spending gobs of money.
Double check with the dealers shop. Alot of these newer cars really don't have much of a filter that the user or tech can get to without tear down. It may not be changeable.
Try turning the steering wheel to one side a little when turning the ignition. The locking mechanism for the key tumbler will not turn if there is eccessive force on it. This can happen if you hit a curb while parking and turning off the car, or if the wheels are turned when shutting of the vehicle. My daughter had the same problem after parking and had to call me to ask me what to do. If that doesn't work there is something wrong with the key tumbler locking mechanism.
the 2003 sonota does not have a roll over switch. It has what is called a roll over valve and is located near the fuel pump. It will not cause any issues as it is self reseting and needs no maintance or replacement
sorry I got a head of myself without a check engine light it probably isnt a mass air flow the 2.4 liter engine is a very very touchy engine I don't think that there would be anything covered by the waranty as its a 2003 things to check first would be tune up condition including a fuel filter and the most important thing is the timming belt and balaceshaft belt
