Question about 1996 Saab 9000

1 Answer

Hi I have a '92 saab 9000cd fuel injected 4 cyl car. recently I have had problems with cold start..car would start ok but run rough like it was missing on one cylinder..then after it got warm about 20mins later the prob was gone when I restarted (having done some driving). I replaced all spark plugs, but prob still there. The car recently got hot a few times due to a heater hose leaking so I removed the direct ignition unit and found one of the bakelite plug caps cracked - i glued and taped this up but still no better. After this I experimented in the mornings before start up by taking the direct ignition unit off the car and warming it i front of a heater, then puting it back on the car. I found there was no "miss" when I started the car then (just coincidence??). Anyway I did this maybe 5 or 6 times on different days but yesterday it didnt make any difference..veryyy rough - and today I drove 500m and the car died. won't start. Fuel supply is fine. I noticed that with the ignitio on there is a constant electrical clicking type of noise coming out of the direct ignition unit - is that normal? Also a friend put multimeters on the resistors(??) inside the direct ignition unit and found only 2 of them had any amp or volt activity..normal? Any help guys?? Thanks in advance. Rob

Hi! I believe that the problem remains in the backelite. You know, when it breaks, all the electrical properties go bad. My advice is that you change it for a new one.
Best regards.
Hope it helps you.

Hei, the most likely is a fault ignition cassette or injector nr 5!? If you have a scope and know how to use it, is easy to see where is the fault!

Half-warm engine start problems. My Saab 9-3, 2,0, 2000 mod. bought in april 2010 has now been running totally 230 000 km. Lately repaced distributor cover, rotor, spark plugs so far. Still the engine...

One possibility is in the the fuel system. It may be the the fuel filter, fuel pump or injecters. You can test fuel pressure to the the injecter rails and change the fuel filter if you haven't already done so.

93' cavalier, very rough running. Missing badly at all speeds and loads, including at idle in park. changed plugs and no change in symptons. Is this an injected motor (4 cyl)?

Yes it is fuel injected. If it runs but has no power there is a good chance that an ignition coil went bad and there would be no spark to two cylinders. Cylinders 1 and 4 are partners on the same coil and 2 and 3 are partners. Usually these cars if an injector goes bad they have an external leak.
You can try to listen to them by holding a screw driver to each on while its running but I don't think
that will be your problem anyway.Another giveaway for the coil could be a gas smell like it is partially flooded. When you changed the plugs were any of them wet with fuel ? There is also a chance that if the engine works ok at highway speeds that the egr valve is stuck open. This causes
rough running at idle and bad hesitation until highway speed is achieved. Hope this helps or let me know and we'll figure it out.

Cold start

Duty cycle needs adjusted, screw in middle of air cleaner assembly leads to it.

Also the fuel distributor may not be allowing fuel in at cold start like it should but until duty is set i wouldnt mess with it.

To set duty cycle its kind of drawn out to put here.

I suggest hopp on over to benzworld.org as they have some great guides and how to's.

Saab 95 2002 3.0l v6 turbo. when warm, starts to

Have you had your mass air meter checked or replaced? This is the unit attached to the air intake hose behind your air filter. It senses the air temperature, speed, density, etc... and adjusts the fuel/air ratio to keep the vehicle running at "peak" performance. Also, check your TPS (throttle positioning sensor) it can also cause the problem you speak of. The TPS adjusts your engine speed/idle etc. and also compensates for hot/cold changes etc. This is roughly a $35.00 part and in most cases usually an easy fix.

Rough idle and lopes

Those 4.3L's have a Central Port Fuel Injection system with one injector in the middle of the intake under the plenum, they are good for either the fuel pressure regulator or the plastic lines (that are inside the intake that feed the injector) leaking inside and flooding the intake with fuel. The best way to tell is to take the plenum off and thurn the key to prime the fuel pump and watch for leaks.
