Coolant leak right under the motor and can smell coolant burning on motor also white smoke from coolant dripping on hot motor

  • carlosE Sep 27, 2008

same problem listed previously, Smoke coming out of the engine. Can't find the lead because it is happening underneath the belts and there is a cover in the way when trying to find it from underneath the car. The leak is very big as when I pour water in the coolant tank it is gone within 2 minutes.

I looked at the radiator, it is fine. The smoke comes from the passenger's side, from the bottom part of the belts. I'm thinking it might be the water pump but I can't see that far and I can't tell where exactly the pump is in the engine.

The leak is probably coming from your radiator's drain hole. Try looking under neath your car at the bottom of the radiator and see if the plug is in (driver side).

Check the condition on your hoses attached to the radiator. Does it only leak with the engine running? If it comes out right away, have some add water to the coolant reservoir while you check where the leak is coming from...this would be a cheaper way to diagnose it (water is way cheaper than coolant). Make sure you have a bucket or a tray under the car to catch any fluids that are leaking. Also, make sure you dispose of coolant properly (do not pour down drain, take fluids to a local repair shop) Scott

When i stand next to the passenger fender i can smell antifreeze. it also over heats when i am driving but no loss of coolant on the ground wheather it is just parked or there over has a 2.2...

how often does it need to be filled? could be a hose leak or line leak but is burning off the motor or exhaust before it can puddle under car. does your exhaust pipe smell or produce a white steam ( smoke ) in color when running? this would indicate the motor has a bad head gasket or cracked head which is letting coolant burn through the cylinder(s), Double check for leaks, under and above motor. it takes a while for anti-freeze to burn off a hot surface due to its lubricant so wipe any wet area and check again. Also you can pull spark plugs( noting what cylinder each plug came from) a spark plug will be very white or clean in color if that cylinder is burning coolant, which indicates a bad gasket or cylinder leak.

a common V6 failure is the intake manifold gasket. coolant will usually leak behind the water pump on the drivers side, however it can leak at other locations on the intake manifold gasket.

coolant leaks from other areas include the heater core, hoses, expansion plugs, trans cooler, and coolant overflow tank.

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue that has a small coolant leak. It appears to be leaking somewhere under the motor on the drivers side of the vehicle. I ran it up yesterday and the fans seem to cycle...

Could be intake gaskets, Use a rad. cap/rad. pressure tester, dont pressurize system higher than the rad cap is rated for(psi). You might find the leak that way.

I have a coolant leak on the line that comes off the bottom of the radiator and goes into a metal line that heads under the motor behind tha altanator

If the coolant is leaking then there is nothing one can do except replace the hose that is leaking. Please do that.

Leak in tube that feeds heater core

What would cause it to leak is corrosion if it is a metal line. If it is rubber, it is just age. If it is metal, I would recommend draining the coolant and replacing it with fresh as it may have become acidic and will cause you more problems in the future -- and that motor has a large metal coolant line under the plenum feeding the back of the water pump. Good luck.

Have a small coolant leak dripping onto transaxle

It could be as simple as a leaking hose, but it may also be a corroded alloy hose fitting nipple.

Get is seen to by a mechanic before it fails completely, causing complete loss of coolant and expensive cooked motor.
