Question about 1997 Saab 900
The problem is your water pump some have a plastic impeller that brakes up which stop the water serculating around the engine thats what causes the engine to overheat. when you replace it make suer the impeller is alloy and change the thermastat has well just to be on the safe side. if its blowing out gray smoke the head gasket needs replacing as well

First of all did you hear your coolant fans come on at all ? If not Look into that first I believe that you have two fans on that Car so make sure both are not working to confirm that its a problem, Now if all that is ok I would look into your thermostat and make sure its ok and working, Now if thats ok You will want to do a compression check to make sure you don't have a Blown head Gasket. If it is a head gasket make sure whom ever does the repair to make sure you have the Heads checked for cracks. I sure hope one of those solutions help you out.
