SOURCE: STARTER WONT ENGAGE ONLY CLICKS UNDER HOOD STATER

If the clicking sound is coming from the engine bay, from the relay, you may want to have the starter itself checked out. You need to check if the ground cable from the engine to the chassis is secured. If that is OK, you may want to have the starter motor checked.

Turn key, solenoid whines does not turn over, ground wire from battery gets hot.touched cable directly to pos term and starter, nothing happened.

Check the battery is fully charged, clean the battery posts and terminals, with a volt meter check for battery voltage on the battery side of the starter solenoid , if ok check for battery voltage on starter side of solenoid while starter engaged , if no voltage replace solenoid, if voltage fault in starter motor.

STARTER MOTOR ENGAGING ALL THE TIME

I would suspect the ignition switch. Power has to be getting to the starter solenoid to activate it. See if you can disconnect the power going into the switch, If the problem stops,.... solved. If problem persists, look for loose wire that could be shorting at the solenoid.

Starter wont engage after replacing dead battery

Check power to starter motor solenoid, solenoid operation and starter motor voltage during cranking. If the starter motor is receiving power from the solenoid, but isn't cranking, then replace the starter motor.

Also check the condition of battery terminals, wiring and connections. Also check the earth wire from the body to the engine.

STARTER DOES NOT ENGAGE

if there is a ticking sound when you try to start it may be the problem with your battery recharge it or if defective replace it. if your battery the terminals of the battery and the starter are ok then check the small motor atop the starter which pushes the starter wheel back and forth there is your problem.

2002 nissan altima wont crank?

Check the transmission neutral start inhibit switch is not the cause of your problem. (try both 'P' to 'N' positions).
If the headlights work ok there should be enough power in the battery to at least make a solenoid type noise when start is attempted- so it may not be caused by a faulty alternator.
Check the battery terminals are clean and firmly attached to the battery,
Check battery is properly grounded to the chassis and motor,
Check that +12v is available at the starter motor engage solenoid when the ignition switch is held in the 'start' position - check any start slave relay operation.
If all above is OK, you may have a faulty starter motor.
