I have similar problem. Cranks but no start. No volt or fuel gauge. No check engine light, can hear fuel pump running. A 20 amp mini fuse under hood blows when I turn key to on. Red light on dash turns on solid when key is set to run position. I replaced the CPS (crank shaft position sensor) no good. Oh yah and i tried to do onboard diagnostic test (on off on off and on) Does not work at all. Fried Flux Compacitor I mean PCM? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Spencer.Dave@hotmail.com

1998 XJ jeep, right, not Grand ! my guess 4.0L
are there any other electrics dead, name them all, wins. here.....
No immoblizer lamp glowing (wrong).
The Jeep will not start but turns (Cranks) over. There is no spark, no power to fuel pump, (cranking?) and the amp gauge and fuel gauge not moving. (fuses blown)have tried to use code finder but it will not register that it is hooked up. If not that means the pin16 fuse on DLC port is blown for sure. (or PCM dead) (assumes correct tool used)

Also have replaced the computer with no luck. HELP!
1998 jeep cherokee wont fire no power to fuel pump and gauges dont move when i turn the key
why not check the fuse first and not PCM. (buy)
the PCM will not run with out power.
the PCM pin 16 on the DLC in cable must have 12vdc on it or all scan tools go DEAD.

i guess you dont know all EFI cars, cut fuel with spark detected as dead. (this is by law and failsafe rules) no fires !
so for get fuel. and plumps, ok.?>
the key facts are.

  1. no spark. (the scan tool would answer this if it worked for sure)
  2. no scans work. (no comms, keyon is a hard failure) fact !!!
  3. gauges dead. (that means the PCM cant talk to the Cluster computer, thats right its a stand alone display using a data buss. so lets ignore it ,until the PCM starts working.
  4. that means the PCM is dead. giving facts here. (not bad, im saying dead as in NO POWER TO IT) fuse F11 blown?
what scan tool name it and the model # so i can see if it does this jeep, all new tools can, but back in 1996 , many cant, ask me how i know these facts (i have 10 tools to cover them all)

so my diagnosis, lacking scan tool brand , model and year.
is the PCM has lost power.

does the CHeckengine light glow keyon? ,it must
does the cluster selftests pass. 1998 is first year.
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/jeeps.html#cluster

i bet it does./ if not ,1 of 2 fuses to it are blown.

next i will lookup all PCM power pins and for sure pin 16 on DLC>
the cluster has a voltmeter, does it work? and show 12v?
does the ASD relay close cranking, it must close for min. of 3 seconds, does it? ( i bet not)
if working book free, why not key on
and check for 12vdc on both sides of all fuses. and end the horror of lost power.
F20 will kill ECU dead.
chapter 8w covers this all..... posted over 100 times here.
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service

pick XJ

JB fuse 11, kills pcm and asd and pump and many things.
JB means cab box.
fuse 17 if blown kills all scan tools
PDC fuse 8 and 22, pdc is engine bay box.
PDC fuse 21, tool,
PDC fuse 18 spark.
PDC fuse 19 is blown kills power to the scan tool DLC pin 16 dead.

there are many fuse that need to work to run this engine
read the FSM 8w sections, reading just your unstated engine
not diesel and not RHD. so.... here it is. and is free.

http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/dlc-no-power-obd2-162775/#post2320806

does your can tool have pins 6 and 7 wired? not empty pins?>

on all jeeps 1993 to now i always check if ASD closes, cranked.
or go on a wild goose chase,
then i scan it, if it cant scan i fix this first.
a dead PCM can not comm. to any scan tool made.
try a innova 3160 , it works, use it. (avoid all old relic tools)
the above works 1996 to NOW.
no 5vdc to the map sensor pin 3, that means the ECU has no power. (this is an acid test of all ECU , the 5v pin)

that's it for now, seems to me you need to try.
  • test all fuses.
  • do the keyon/off/off trick DTC check for codes;
  • do the cluster tests. self test.....
  • get 12vdc to the PCM and DLC (or all will be dead)
  • and then we have the facts. to go to real cause. or its fixed with just fuses........ fuse are first. not last. why do i have to say that?

Cps was not the problem. Replaced it anyways. I found a dead short within the wires for my o2 sensor. Not the sensor on the cat, but the sensor closer too the exhaust manifold.

I just had the same problem on my 96 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 engine. After needlessly replacing the PCM, I found out that the PCM will shut itself off if it has a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor. That is why your code reader will not link up. Replace the CPS and your problem is solved.

What could be wrong with my 2001 Jeep grand cherokee 4.0? It cranks and cranks but won't start. Gauges don't move and key light on dash has line through it. Changed CPS and cleaned battery terminals a

Is it out of gas? Try spraying starting fluid into the throttle body and see if it starts then. If so, you have a fuel delivery problem. If not, you have an electrical problem (no spark).

I have a 1993 jeep yj put a new fule pump in it lots of gas in fule rail turns over dost start can aneyone help

If the injectors do not fire, fuel in the rail does not matter since it's not getting gas into the engine. Look to see if your check engine light comes on, when you turn on the ignition. If it does not, then your ecu computer is in need of repair since it's not sending either a spark or fuel injector signal to fire up your jeep.

Engine won't start

If you turn the key to ON position and its not cranking at all, then its battery fault. If its cranking but not starting at all. That means the starter is also getting power. So if its cranks but not start then there are few possibilities to be checked. But if its not craning and no noise then battery and starter are to be checked. In other case :----

A jeep that cranks over but doesn't start, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. Also these problems are related to faulty spark plug. Check the spark at spark plugs when you start the jeep. Do you notice any spark. Actually you should see. If in case there is no spark then it's a spark plug problem. Also the coil pack gives power to spark plug. So check the voltage at coil pack. It will show 12 volt. If there is no voltage noticed at coil pack then its faulty coil pack that has to be replaced. If all the possible options checked out ok then check the jeep starter. The starter gets power from battery to start the jeep. If the starter is faulty then it will not let the jeep to start. Also check and confirm that there is fuel in the jeep. If its very low fuel then in some cases this causes the problem. Also check and confirm that fuel pump is functioning properly and the fuel filter is not clogged. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the jeep. If the jeep starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the jeep is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gauge and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. If the injectors don't have pulse the engine won't start. ---------- This troubleshooting tips will help you to solve the problem. Thanks. Helpmech.

Fule guge

HI, you will need to replace the sending unit that is located inside the tank. this unit is part of the fuel pump assembly and it sends the level of the fuel to the gauge, via wire transfer. there is a floater that is attached to the pump assembly, and it is damaged. replacing this sending unit will fix this issue.

Will not start

dont really know these vehicles but the fault could be a multi-connector that has high resistance ie burnt out lucar connectors, could be at back of ignition switch, vauxhalls suffered there. i would start there and work backwards to power source.
fords suffered similar fault with fuel pumps but that was the actual fuse box which burnt out internal links! when tracing power source use a 12volt test lamp, dont use a multimeter as this may show good voltage because its not under load. however dont use a test lamp on the computor wiring (which I doubt the fault is) as it wont like such a high resistance and damage may result. good luck
