Your diagnosis sounds about right. Antenna cable is large round cable pushed into rear of radio. Common with bouncing/stiff suspension on trucks.
The cable is easy, it's accessing the back of your radio that can be a trick to get at. Sometimes if you go from passenger side, under dash you can reach it. Sometimes glove box has to come out. Once you get to it, you'll be amazed how easy it plugs in. You'll probably find your cable is laying there, from your description.
