Question about 1999 Chevrolet K1500

2 Answers

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra with the 4.8 V8. It recently started making a knocking sound that is louder upon cold starting. Today as I was accelerating, I noticed a big loss in power and the motor light started flashing. The moter is not overheating and the oil pressure is fine. What could be the problem?

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado with the 5.0 liter v8 and am experiencing the same problems. It seems to smell like something made of either plastic or rubber is burning under the hood. The truck has roughly 96000 miles on it and has been well maintained. Any ideas to what may be wrong with it?

I brought it to a friend and found that the catalytic converter had melted down. Of course it had happened to both of them. It's right around $1000 to have done. Not a fun expense and it does not give you much warning before it stops you dead on the road.

I have a 2003 gmc Sierra half ton 4.8 liter that has a knock that sounds like lifters

There is,If you do the lifter you could be after something else,The noise sounds like a collapsed lifter,A collapse lifter can cause a misfire,The 2003 GMC sierra or I should say the 4.8 engines suffer from a cut O-ring between the oil pump screen and the oil pump causing oil areation, resulting in lifter noise,The noise will be present a cold start and then diminish at warm up.12_3_2012_8_08_44_am.gif

Could be a starter sticking but that would cause more of a grinding noise, my best guess is that your flex-plate(flywheel) is broken if the noise is coming from between the engine and transmission. Remove the access cover for the bell housing and take a look at the flex-plate.

96 Suburban v8/7.4L/454 K2500, Knocking Noise??

sound like an internal engine problem. either one or more of the pistons has "piston slap" and that knocking will diminish as the engine warms up or possibly a rod bearing is worn out. have a tech do a manual oil pressure test to make sure the oil pump and main bearings are ok. piston slap or knock that decreases when the engine warms up is not that serious, but a rod bearing knock or possible oil pump failure should be taken care of asap.

MY 2000 GMC sierra 5.3L is pinging what could it be?

if it is a knocking sound coming from the top of the motor it could be something as simple as detonation this can be casueed by the incorect fuel grade being used or from years of carbon building up in the cyclenders casueing hot spots. if this infact knocking from this you could try some higher octane fuel or a additive to increase your octane rating and it should get quieter or disapear all together. this could also be cuased by a faulty knock sensor. if the sound is more of a metal on metal sound or farly loud you could be looking at major engein problems. such as a bering getting ready to go or a stuck or sticking valve. or a wrist pin that is getting ready to let loose. is the sound coming from the top of the motor or the bottom. can you here the sound louder on the left or right side of the engen compartment. also i need to know does the sound change with the speed of the motor like when you rev it up. also does the sound get louder or quieter when the truck is under a load like climbing a hill or hard accelerating? I will be able to give a more detailed answer if you answer thous questions also what grade of fuel do you use?

This deffinently sounds like your ignition module, it is located on the side of the distributor generally hald on by two screws. This is a very common thing with Chevy / GMC. Good luck and remember to rate all the solutions that you get, thanx.
