Question about 1996 Volvo 850
If you look in the manual, there is a way of removing the boot from the centeral locking, when it is removed, the key comes out of the boot lock horizontally, when central locking is engaged, it comes out vertically

Its dirty, rusted or the rivets are coming loose. Open up clean and spray a little oil. If that does not help. Take a hammer and after removing the whole lock resecure the rivets with the hammer.
IT MAY ALSO BE THAT YOUR BATTERY IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH ANYMORE AND SHOULD BE CHECKED.
