2004 jeep wrangler 2.4 litre 4 cylinder

My jeep starts and idles great, but when i start driving it runs smooth through 1st gear. once i shift into second gear on the high end between 2000 and 3000 rpms it misses once it clears 3000 rpms it breaks free and runs strong again. also my gas gage drops like a tach i am only getting about 12 miles to the gallon. i feel like it must be a fuel problem but not sure where to start.

Check the ground wirea at the dipstick tube, remove them all,and bend the ends of the wire, look for weak or broken wires, i bought several 4 cyl jeep that had problems at shift, fall on their face < after the engine settled back in to place,so wires made contact> just a thot. the ground wires are small the engine moves, when shifting.

thrust bearings are bad and the flywheel is moving out of range of the crankshaft sensor, or the crankshaft sensor is sitting too close to the flywheel.

if this is something that started suddenly, it could be a leak in your master cylinder or slave cylinder, or your fluid could be low, or there could be air in the lines. Make sure it's full of fluid, and get back to me.

Cant shift into first gear or reverse

You are likely correct...sounds like the synchro is shot or the shift fork is somewhat worn. Is fluid full?
As long as the clutch does not slip and is engaging and disengaging somewhere in the center to just below center of travel, it's OK.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

1991 jeep wrangler not shifting into gear could this be clutch

I would first bleed the tranny lines, if that doesnt work then your tranny is out and need to get it replaced. FYI with Jeep Wranglers, It is better to get a new transmission then to rebuild them
