can we know a problem first?
speedo dead?
transmission shifts wrong? A/T?
ABS brakes bad (lamp glows ABS fails)
scan tool shows vss error. which one what DTC error?
Cruise contr. fails>?
ecm pin12 is speed input and says from cluster
color V-Y to cluster a11 output.
Input speed to cluster is at A12 FROM ABS
SO SPEED IS FROM ABS SYSTEM.

scan the ABS with a ABS scan tool .
if ABS fails VSS goes dead.
abs also runs cluster speedo gauge direct from ABS pin marked SPO pin 7 abs box.

run the fault codes
it could be a VSS sensor that is not communicating with the TCM to select OD
it also reports to the speedo to show speedo reading

run the fault codes but it may be a VSS sensor failing
the speedo reading and cruise control all rely on a VSS signal.

Speedo dead, makes noise, bounces? what? stuck high? what?
odometer dead.
CEL glows running, the check engine light glows, running
and you insert the 1cent paper clip in the DLC connector and you get
code flashing. code 24, VSS dead?

if yes, the cable has snapped. (fell off at either end)
if not VSS dead, then the speedo is dead
if both odometer and speed are dead and VSS are dead the
snapped cable, or cable fell off rear of speedo head.
if VSS is not bad. (no 24s)
and only speedo is dead but , odometer is good
then that means the actual speedo clock inside the head is bad.

to repair a dead speed/cluster, you replace the whole head
if real frisky then you do this.
suzuki even sells new clocks, but are very expensive
what i do is find a used head. and use that. (car-parts.com) or at fleabay.
sometimes i mix 3 heads to get one, good head.
that is all you can do, on old cars unless rich, and $200 head is pocket change.

Do you mean by the speedo head the VSS or vehicle speed sensor that is on the tail shaft end of the gearbox with two wires coming out of a connector and which sends an electronic signal to the instrument cluster which displays a reading onthe speedo?

the vss runs off a gear in your transmission.

There is a gear that drives the sensor gear much like the old speedo cable gear.
If you connected the sensor and the check engine light went off, chances are the sensor is working.

Hi, I'm not familiar with the part, but the diagram shows it behind the glove box next to the ECM. Go in thru the bottom--remove the sound barrier, remove the EMC, then remove the buffer. What I recommend is to see if you can get one at a salvage yard. Otherwise, they are about $50 on eBay. Thanks for using FixYa.

The transmission and speedo COULD be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and or related wires. The Tach is a seperate circuit that gets signal from Distributor and power is fed through the "Gauges" fuse. The only way I see them being a related concern is either The ground (G200) and is located Behind the left side of the IP, below the fuse block, on the tie bar. the other way would be the IP cluster itself.
I think you MAY have 2 issues. I would get the VSS checked and make sure your getting a signal to the VSS buffer (located next to the PCM, around the glove box area). Make sure the buffer is sending the signal out. A Scan tool SHOULD be able to assist you in this. If there is NO VSS signal the transmission will not shift properly, if at all.
Also your speedo will drop off with no VSS.
As stated, this is just advise from experience and published material.
If in doubt, please take it to a Repair shop in your area your familiar with. regards ranjit

I have volvo s40 2001 and all of sudden my speedo meter is not working, engine temparature display is not working, I can't see the number of miled done. Please help me what is the problem.
