The question is, is this an automatic or manual transmission, if its automatic then the tranny is sliping and if its a manual then the clutch plate is done. Now here is another thing very important IF the catlic converter is pluged then the acceleration gets slow too cause the exhaust cannot get out, so make sure?

Put your vehicle in 2nd gear and try to drive foward, if the vehicle starts to roll then clutch plate is done and if the vehicle dies then the clutch plate is good and the problem is some thing else.

When driving if i push the gas pedle to the floor what would cause the car to slow down and the RPMs to go up ?

automatic i assume? the trans could be slipping if trans fluid is brownish red and smells kinda like burnt catpiss that is an indacation . if someone tells you its slipping and needs to be replaced put new trans filter and fluid change first i have had alot of success with tranies just doing that and its relatively cheap

Problem accelerating after 40 rpms shoot up

You have a failed transaxle

The rpm flairs, that is a dead give away

You may have a worn out & clogged exhaust converter, adding to the problem, but the trans is gone, if the rpm flairs & after 45, you it doesn't run half decent

Will not excelerate past 4000 rpm

IF you have a carby then take it apart and clean it out as all the throats are not working properly including the accelerator pump.

98 ford zx2 2.0 dohc stalls out woulnt idle long & doesnt pick up power when you push gas if you push gas fast will backfire.will gain rpms if gas is pushed slow

It sounds like you may have a clogged-up catalytic converter. Try cracking the exhaust loose at the flange in front of the engine where the Catalytic converter bolts to the exhaust manifold. You don't have to take it all the way down, just 1/2" or so. You may have to take the bolt loose on the bracket where the pipe mounts to the oil pan to get the cat to drop down. After you get it down a ways, start it up and see if it runs better. (It will be very loud) If it idles and accelerates without dying or backfiring, then your cat is clogged up.

Daughter says that car is not accelerating right in 5th. When she pushes down on gas petal, the RPMs rev and it doesn't accelerate. But if she eases down on gas, it will accelerate. Car has a manual...

The clutch is slipping, eventually it will fail completely. The reason she notices it in 5th gear is because 5th or overdrive uses the transmission the most IE low rpms high speeds. Soon it will affect all gears. Sorry the only way to fix it ts to replace it.
I think they make a clutch kit for this model
Good luck
Hope this helps
