I own a 1997 Mazda Miata MX-5, and have power in the "run" key position, but when i turn all the way to start the engine, nothing happens. I have 11.7 VDC from the battery so it is charged.

Sounds like the starter relay or the solenoid is on the start itself is badSome of the MX-5 also had a fuse for the ignition, check that also.

All MX-5's are MIATA'S. the coil pack may be bad. 3000 rpms at 20mph, sounds like the trans is slipping if it was an automatic trans. it helps when you tell EVERYTHING about the car, like what trans is has, ect.

2000 miata- from a cold start, will have multiple misfires, drive it for 5 minutes and it runs perfect. have replaced fuel filter and plugs. starts and runs perfectly the rest of the time.

how about a set of plug wires? i good way to test other than getting them wet is in the a.m. when engine cold, soak em down with some wd-40 then start if ok or greatly improved then there your culprit
