Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Grand Cherokee Ltd, '96 - serious electrics issue

We have a '96 Grand Cherokee Ltd (for simplicity reasons i will refer to it as "car" now)since April of last year. The car has spnt more time standing arround in local garages than driving. The main issue the jeep had from day one is:

- During driving the drivers and passangers window would roll down without anyone intending to do so. After this they would not roll back up, when we tried to do so, until the car was turned off and restarted a few times. Sometimes the windows would roll down when the car was started with the same issues.
-The car would never start when the key was taken out of the ignition and put back in, without the doors being locked in between. Something the dealer told us was normal in a Jeep, that the doors have to be locked and unlocked again via remote, to be able to start the vehicle.
- The doorlocks would lock and try to keep locking while driving. Even when the ignition was turned off this would continue going for quite some time until it would stop. We had tried everything we know of, but nothing would fix the problem.
- Then in October last year the car overheated while driving through town. We had it in the local garage again, for quite some time, as we resorted back to our other vehicle for the time being, which was much more reliable.

Now the main issue at the moment is: We are trying to sell the vehicle but will obviously get more if it is actually running. Now when we tried to start it at the garage, the doors would not lock and unlock again (something necessary to get the car to start). The windows rolled down when i tried to start it (as usual by now) but the engine wouldnt turn because the doors werent locked and unlocked again. We replaced the batteries in both remotes we have but to no avail. The remotes dont lock/unlock the doors and the vehicle will not start.

- How can we get the remotes to work? and
- what might be the issue for the windows and doorlocks problem during driving as discribed earlier?

Hello there. I am going to take a stab at this issue you have. First off make sure that the remotes have fresh batteries. You can take them to any autozone and have them checked to make sure they are working correctly as well. But start with new batteries in the remotes. As for the door locks working and not working might be a bigger pain in the bottom. My first option would be to have the ignition sensor tested. I would be will to bet it is bad. Its a little sensor that is supposed to detect when the ignition is on and the vehicle is put into drive to lock the doors. Its a built in answer to car jacking. But if the sensor is lose or malfuctioning then it can cause the system to go nuts. If that does not work then I am willing to bet you have a short somewhere in the vehicle security settings. I would try to find a way to bypass the chrysler sercurity system and see if that fixes your problems. I am willing to bet it will.

G'day mate , my best tip would be to take it back to the electrician, reason is that on a complex set of systems such as a motor car when one "weak" part is replaced then the next weakest one will show up, its a process of elimination not a quick fix , give the man a go as he is highly trained ( we would hope ) hope this helps

All wheel drive v8 issues 96 Jeep Grnd Cherokee Ltd

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.
Good luck!

Grand Cherokee Ltd, '96 - serious electrics issue

look up schematics for the auto lock system for your model.
get a highlighter.
trace the lines from the actual lock motor to the PCM (powertrain control module) note all objects you come into contact with when using the highlighter. the circuit should not be that complicated. if you are not familiar with circuits, find someone who is.
write them down.  the components.
take your findings to your nearest, knowledgeable, experienced technician and get him to test each component. you will find your problem.
the window problem, i would go right to the motor. it sounds like your are getting a short to ground somewhere in the motor, or near it. take the door panel off and look at the motor for anything abnormal.
