is it the sensor or sensor circuit if circuit need to check wiring and connections --and the other 3 codes did you correct them or just cleared all codes when sensor was replaced
Have a repair shop diagnose the PO340 Cam Sensor Fault Code
Doesn't mean the sensor is bad
Find out why it reported to code
If the shop compares the cam sensors to ignition timing on a V6 ,the events have to occur at 120 degrees for each cylinder, when viewed on an oscilloscope
code p 0320 refers to crank shaft position sensor (CKP)/engine speed (RPM ) sensor---circuit malfunction====causes ---wiring---CKP/RPM sensor ---ECM
code p 0340 refers to camshaft position sensor (CMP) sensor A bank 1---circuit malfunction===causes wiring---CMP sensor ---ECM
following engine work , it is always best to check that all of the harness connections were assemble properly
check for broken wires during the work
The Cam Position Sensor is a common item to fail. However, the cam positioning mechanism can fail too giving that code.
There are two sensors and the Exhaust Cam Sensor is most common to fail. I always replace both. Te CKP's are on the top front of the engine next to the cylindrical operation solenoids.
Knock sensors fail too and need checked or correct feedback to ECU with a scanner. Find a shop near you at http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/
These engines require regular oil changes with quality synthetic oils and OE filter....not a FRAM or WIX !
Buy only BMW sensors ...aftermarket have high failure rate.
Hi Swpsmith,
The code P0340 is for the camshaft sensor circuit. P1383 is for the variable cam timing, the actuator on the exhaust cam.
Do you need information on diagnosing the codes? If you do,let me know what kind of test equipment you have available. Do you have a scanner that will show operating data along with codes? Or a Digital volt, ohm meter?
I hope this helps.If you need anything else,drop me a line. Thanks,Chuck

Dear: I have performed the necessary procedures, in the end, the electronic control unit is faulty.
Thank you for your help.
