Use cars driver info center to access engine data, scroll thru to engine/coolant temp. If temp is way off, such as you get heat from your vents but engine temp is 50,you have found the cause. coolant temp sensor is the engine computers "choke", rich cold, lean hot, etc.

Take it to an Autozone or O'Reillys and they will test the computer for you. It should have set a code, but you don't know if the code light works so its your best bet. Sounds like it is running rich and the crankshaft module is not advancing the timing.

SOURCE: car was running fine next lost power hard to keep

Black smoke is from oil burning through the exhaust. It sounds like the rings are shot since a lost of power is your problem. If power was not an issue it would be a bad valve seal

Hard to start then black smoke out exhaust rough idle

Check the fuel pressure regulator. It may be bad. Pull off the vacuum hose to it and check for any sign of gas in the hose. A busted diaphragm in the regulator could let extra gas into the intake through the vacuum hose. The black smoke indicates it is getting too much gas-running rich.

Black smoke coming out of exhaust, only on immediate acceleration. Leaves black spots on ground under exhaust pipe.

Your engine is running "too rich" meaning more gas is going into the chamber than is supposed to. If it is a late model, to need to see your mechanic. FYI , blue smoke is oil, black too much gas, white, antifreeze, (really bad).
