Question about Toyota Corolla

2 Answers

Our 1991 Toyota Corolla failed inspection recently for high NOX emissions. The car seems to run OK, but I am not sure how to fix this NOX problem. Anybody have a clue? thanks...

Failed emissions hc high

First I recommend changing spark plugs, air filter, and change the oil & filter. If these are dirty or fouled up it will kill your millage and help to fail smog.
You can reduce both NOX and CO emmissions by adding denatured alcohol to the gas tank. Run it down to a bit under 1/4 tank and add 1 1/2 gallons. It makes the engine run a bit rough, but really clean.
If you still fgail SMOG then you need a new catalytic converter.
I used to "trick" my 86' with alcohol, but just rebuilt the engine so I put a new Cat on it. It passed emissions with WELL BELLOW numbers.

Good luck.

Tip

Failing emissions testing due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen)

I have seen several people posting emissions failures due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen). Nox is created when the engine's internal combustion temperature gets to high.

Two reasons this can occur is improper coolant levels and a malfunctioning egr system. The egr system injects exhaust gas from the exhaust and uses it to line the cylinder walls. This in turn reduces the combustion chamber size and internal combustion temperatures. Ultimately this reduces the amount of NOX created. These systems functioning properly can be the difference in passing or failing your emissions testing because of high NOX ppm.

Smog problem

I think you are probably referring to the NOx emissions which are largely controlled by the EGR valve. It is very common for the passages it controls to become plugged. You must remove the valve and clean out the intake manifold. You can find a lot of info by googling "egr cleaning" or get more specific by adding "corolla" or "toyota".

Not sure, but did you replace the oxygen sensors. Is your catalytic converter still good?

post the readings. does the car overheat?
NOX is caused by combustion temerature being too high. many possible causes. common ones are EGR system, running lean, deffective catylitic.
