Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

GMC pickups I have a '99 and a 2006 GMC with the same engine (5.3L ), transmission, and rear differential (373). The trucks pull my boat very differently. The 2006 does not have the power the 99 displays on the hills we travel. The 2006 has to shift down more often, scream up to 5,000 rpm to gain speed back, shift up, loose speed and go thru the process again. Local Chev dealer cannot find any problems with the ' 06. ??? What can I do within the warranty to improve the '06 ??

Howtoreplcerearendbackseal

engine rear main seal? rear seal of transmission? or rear seal of rear differential? if it is the rear main engine seal, you have to pull the transmission to access this seal.

Clanging noise rear and rear don't pull

The axle probably lost a keeper ring on the inside of the differential and the pieces may be going through the differential and ring&pinion gearing making the noises you hear. You will need to drain the oil out, find the broken pieces, and inspect all gearing for broken/damaged teeth, and for any noisy bearings. Flush the case out with cleaning solvent. Re-insert the loose axle after cleaning and inspecting it well--especially the interior end. Replace the keeper (new) on the axle end inside the differential spider gearing. Inspect the brakes on the loose axle side for any oil deposits and for any damage that might have been caused when the axle came out. If the differential is badly damaged, it might be cheaper to find another rear end in a wrecking yard. Hope this helps!

Trying to find out how much oil the Triton V-10 takes when I do my oil change? I cant seem to find it or anyone who knows

It should be listed in the owners manual, but because of different oil cooler setups you may have to do the change yourself and add oil until the correct level is established..... for the first oil change.
Most likely 7 liters, but start with 5,run the engine to fill the oil filter, let it sit for 5 mins and recheck and fill to full.
Note the amount needed for next time.

Have a 95 seirra 2500 pickup rear axle seal and bearing out, do i need to go into the differential to pull axle?

Depends on what kind of axle you have. Is it a semi-floating axle, or a full-floating type?

I have a 2007 1/2 ton GMC Sierra. I pull boats

I've never seen this problem, but the guy who said you needed sandbags is probably correct. Other than that, the front suspension should be checked.
