I had a similar problem with my 98 mystique when i bought it used. I had no overdrive and was lucky to find a honest transmission shop that found the problem. In my case the overdrive was unplugged. They plugged it back in,cleared the computer and changed my tranny fluid and i was good to go. You should be revving about 2400rpm at 65mph. The other thing you can check is to make sure that the wires that go from the overdrive button are not broken off or coroded.

My 98 bravada Oldsmobile keeps shifting in and out of overdrive

Is there a button on the shifter that allows to activate or deactivate over drive? Does the OD light flash, and do you so the rpm raise at all? Nine times out of ten a over drive problem is the first symptom of the transmission in the vehicle acting up and eventually blowing.

98 Mercury Mystique. The transmission shifts from 1st to 3rd and will not go into overdrive. This is the second transmission with exactly the same problem. I had a junkyard transmission put in the car 75...

that transmission has a computer control unit
transmission combined with the EFI system

supposed to match that unit with the transmission fitted
or diagnostic scanner to reset the modules

I don't think my 95 Grand Cherokee is shifting into overdrive all the time. Can you tell me what the RPMs should be for it running 65 MPH?

Depending on differential gearing, most run at about 21 hundred rpms @65. Overdrive usually shifts in at around 45mph. To see if it is engaged, while doing about 50, lightly tap the brake. That should momentarily disengage the od and the rpm's should increase for a moment. @45, you should notice the rpm drop when it engages initially.

My overdrive

the OD light flashing indicates that the transmission control module has observed a fault. Take the car to a local aftermarket parts place and get the codes pulled (typically free) this will send you in the right direction regarding a repair.

Driving 65 MPH and engine rpm goes to 7K. Not in O.D. light comes

sound to me like it maybe a faulty sensor in the transmission. take your car to someone with an ODB reader and see if a transmission fault is indicated. you may have to take your car to a transmission shop.

My overdrive light is flashing indicating the overdrive is off

this could mean there is a problem with the transmission, but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?

Overdrive

If the OD light is flashing, your transmission is bad. Have it rebuilt, because it most likely is the transmission fluid pump. Good luck!
