Sounds like the shifting lever is loose, follow it up under the dash until you find the pin that it turns on, there will be two bolts holding the assembly together and they have gotten loose most likely. Tighten them up and let me know if it starts better. Also try starting it in neutral with the parking brake on at all times.

Try disconnecting the battery cable for two minutes and check if you still get the problem.
The problem is probably with the automatic gear shift control module, which is a computer. If you do not clear the problem you will need to go to a garage. the mechanics will connect a scanner to car computer, get an error message in return, diagnose and repair the problem.

Select start withignition switch and sometimes nothing happens. No other problems are seen. All other instrument indiations seem normal. Keep trying and, so far, it will start.

will or will not crank?
if no crank wiggle the gear selector cranking
or try cranking in neutral. (fresh contacts there)

nothing to me means it will not crank.
if A/T wiggle the shifter,
the park lock out will allow you to shift to neutral, hand brake set.
then crank.
if it wont crank now, try, jumper cable cranks next.

Automatic 1996 Pontiac Bonneville wont shift gears

Transmissions have so many parts so it's difficult to diagnose. I would have the transmission filter changed first. Usually that is the most common shifting problem. If that doesn't fix the problem it may be a little more costly.

I was in the store I came out and it just wouldn't start the battery is not dead it's getting gas starter doesn't click although it is charged

Wiggle the gear shift handle(assuming it's an auto trans) and the try to start it in neutral. If it's a manual trans, make sure you have the clutch pedal completely down. Check your battery connections, and if all else fails, try tapping the starter motor gently with a hammer. Sometimes this will get you one or two more starts out of a faulty starter, but be careful!

It won't start.

sometimes the bolts on the gear shift (inside column) come loose and the vehicle does not know it is in park, so won't crank. My parents had this problem with their 1994 Villager. Wiggling the gear shift allowed it to start... of course the real solution was to tighten up the bolts.

1996ford econ Shifting gear problem

Almost definately, follow the shift linkages down the column and under the bonnet get a buddy to move them while you are looking the worn parts will be very obvious. quite involved to repair if it all needs to be overhauled, may be best to be left to an experianced tech, unless you have relevent experience. it wont start somtimes because the inhibitor switch is on the linkage.
