Check your transmission fluid and if there's enough fluid in there your tranny could just be going out. It might be a problem with your sync rows or the gears are just gone

Will not shift out first gear

I assume this is an automatic?
If the shift linkage is not damaged (jammed or disconnected the usual answer is the governer valve in the transmission is sticking.
The fix for this normally involves pulling the trans out stripping it apart cleaning the governer valve new seals gaskets and reassembling.
(translated lots of money) try using a auto trans flush to clean all the gunk out of the transmission. Run the trans through all the gears with the trans flush and try driving it (only short distance test drive as its not proper trans fluid) see if you can get it out of first gear (flatten the gas pedal and let the engine go to max revs on short bursts) once it shifts once or twice go back and remove the trans flush fluid and replace with correct specification auto trans fluid I would also change the transmission filter at this point if it was mine .

Auto trans stops shifting , turn car off and restart it goes again

Mileage and Age can wear out your tranny fluid, an filter...If budget is limited...read the label on Lucas Oil Transmission stabilizer bottle...you don't need to drain anything to add this proven treatment.

Transmission is erratic

I am not a transmission guy, but I have had problems in the past with the new filter not being seated correctly after servicing causing all kinds of wonky symptoms. Just a thought, but it sounds like the problem started before service "daughter said it was behaving erractically in traffic circles". Its nearing 20 years of service - it might just be on its way out. Tear down and rebuild is expensive - might just trade it in and start fresh. Good luck.

1993 chevy k1500 transmission problem

Do you mean start the car in drive? if so that problem is inhibitor switch. Other shift problems can be caused by TPS (throttle posistion sensor) if applicable

1996 chev k1500-- when the weather turned cold the transmission seems to slip at start up in the morning. After I get going it seems to shift and run fine. Maybe feels a little soft on the shift for...

it sounds like the trans filter needs changed. the fluid will be thicker when its cold and will not pass through the clogged filter as easy. As you drive it the fluid heats up and becomes thinner then is able to pass through easier.

Manually shift thru all gears up & down the scale. Try adding Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, available from Ford parts dept. This REALLY STINKS!!! Don't get any on you. Pour into trans fluid. Drive a few miles shifting manually thruthe gears, then do a normal start stop drive several times. This will luburcate trans, normally used for differential but has worked in automatic transmissions of all makes for years. Otherwise mechanical problem for transmission repair facility.
