97 GMC Safari w/ 4.3(W) V6 vortec. 195k miles. Engine is running very rich. 10mpg. Smell of gas sometimes coming from exhaust when running. It has rough idle, and dies, especially when cold. Lacks power, but sometimes briefly works fine. Not throwing any codes. I have replaced and/or checked for proper operation; plugs, wires, coil, distributor assy. (incl CMP), O2 sensors, CAT pipe, fuel filter, Fuel pump assy., EGR, MAF, MAP, TPS, IAC, PVC, fuel pressure regulator and air filter. The timing chain was also replaces and checked four times to make sure EVERYTHING was in sync. Fuel pressure is within parameters and the vacuum is solid, as well. Inside the plenum it is coated with a layer of black, gritty soot. No fuel puddling though. This has been plaguing me for two months now. Big thanks in advance.

Thought the same thing, but also thought it might be a good idea to check all of the accessible new parts installed first, because new doesn't always mean good. The new MAP turned out to be bad. Voltage was in parameters but well below where it was supposed to be. Some of the other parts actually did need replacing when I did, but since it was a multi-step problem, finding the real solution became a bit more difficult. Give me a carb any day!!! Now I have a few "new" parts to sell...

I got a 1999 gmc sonoma 4.3 v6 vortec I have strong exhaust fumes coming threw the a/c vents while the a/ is on

You have a leak in the exhaust system. Have it looked at soon. You don't want to be breathing carbon monoxide while driving. If you hear a "ticking" sound while the engine is running (more predominant with a cold engine) it's most likely an exhaust manifold leak, either a bad gasket, broken stud or cracked manifold. Other possible causes could be the "donut" gaskets that seal the Y pipe to the exhaust manifolds, the Y pipe to catalytic converter gasket (if equipped).

If your not getting the MIL- engine light coming on and you can smell gas and you had the fuel pump replaced. I would sespect the electronic ignition module of being intermintent. It wouldn,t necessarily show as an engine code and would make it so the vehicle would run find one munite and not run the next The other thing you could check is the fuel filter however i can,t see a mechineic not changeing this with the fuel pump

Try disconnecting the wire to the mass airflow sensor, and see if the symptoms change drastically. It's a three wire connector right behind the air filter box. This is what it looks like on a 97 4.2 liter v6. If the vehicle runs better, get some MAF cleaner fluid, and try cleaning it. It may need replacement, but only if the symptoms change with it disconnected.

sounds like your fuel injectors are possilbly sending in a RICH FUEL MIXTURE( more fuel than needed ) due to what could benumerous reasons. First is there a service light coming on ? If yes, might be a few codes. Might show a clue ( code ) as to where the problem is. Necessary to use a scanner to read codes. Hope this helps
