serpentine belt is getting old and hard and the cold weather was causing it to slip
check belt condition ( small cracks across the grooves = scrap and get a new one) and check tension
Try slipping the drive belt (fan belt, alternator belt, or whatever you want to call it) off the engine, then run the engine momentarily without the belt. If the noise disappears, at least you now know it is not an internal engine problem, and it will be an issue with one of the pulleys, or belt-driven accessories.
Good afternoon, it sounds like a slipping fan belt......as this would reduce the friction and amount of turns that the alternator needs to do to create voltage..........then as the belt warms up, the fibres expand and the ruber becomes sticky and it stops slipping....therefore the problem is always worse when it is cold.......
The pulleys may be out of alignment due to a bent or misinstalled alternator bracket. the alternator itself may be pulling so much current that the belt is slipping on its pulley. (might be why the other alternator failed. Check the battery voltage with everything turned off and see if you have a parasitic battery drain.) The bearing for the idler pulley (if equipped) could be failing.
It sounds like you have a belt or pulley problem, or possibly a bad bearing in the alternator, or water pump. I would suggest, having it looked at, by a mechanic right away.
Your belt is slipping. As the belt ages, the surface gets hard and 'glazed', causing it to slip at one of the pulleys it spins (water pump, alternator, etc). Replace the belt and it should be fine.
most likely your alternator, when it is cold and you start the alternator needs to recharge a heavy discharge, bearings or slip ring worn. also check the drive belt for wear,
when do you get the sqeerching noise?
