Oil pressure is 60 psi with engine not running, jumps to 80 when engine starts

so where your eyes look at to see 60, ?
the dash?
or a real gauge , at the block, port. (gallery)

you must learn 2 things, about dash gauges
  1. they are not really instruments. not even close, more toy like.
  2. and some return to zero others do NOT.
many cars made, you key off and the gauges, freeze.
this is nothing new and is normal.

use the scan tool yet and look for DTC errors from the cluster?
in any event.
id concerned about engine oil pressure , try a real gauge.
if concerned about just the dash gunge?, then scan it first. then do the self tests shown in the FSM.

this car the PCM sense oil pressure data via the PCI bus
to the cluster and then it displays this data.
im not sure which years return to zero.
the PCM gets its DATA from the oil pressure sender.
if the pCM shows the data to bee good using a scan tool
then we check for errors on the PCI buss. if that is good
the display is bad, if the data is wrong. there.

here is the path of data. in text
sender>>> pcm>>> pci bus>>>> cluster.>>> gauge.

see the FSM page , 1 or 9 pages just for the cluster. page 7

factory service manual or alldata.com
either.

What causes the speedometer to stop working on a 97 mercury tracer

If it's not moving at all, you may have to replace the gauge (or gauge cluster, depending on your dash setup). You can always test this by seeing if it's getting proper power/ground to it. If it is, then clearly the gauge is broken and needs replacement.

Grand AM 97 3.1L SE will not start until you jump it runs for a while and gauges and lights start to flicker and then car dies. When you rejump it does the same thing. Im thinking its a ground problem or...

It is the alternator. It may be putting out a charge but it is not enough. Once the car uses up the energy in the battery it will do exactly what yours is doing. And yes yours is old enough to run with out the cluster.

Battery died, gauge cluster bulbs on dimly, now rough idle result

How much have you driven vehicle? You need to drive long enough for computer to reset refrence points onboard. If that does not work, you have a bad voltage limiter on your instrument cluster board!

Instrument panel went dead

Checked Every fuse in the fuse box (no small task). This includes #4 - Power point Instrument Panel, #14 - Day time running lamps (auto lamps doesn't work nor does auto lock), #27 - ignition switch run feed, #35 - Instrument Cluster, #41 - Instrument Cluster, #42 - Delayed Accessory, #45 - Ignition switch run/start feed, #102 - Door locks body security module, #103 - Ignition switch, #110 - Ignition switch, & #116 - Ignition switch. But I also check all other ones as well, they all register OK. AC panel & radio work. Turn signals work. Mileage does not work, trip computer does. So, basically, everything works except auto head-lights, auto locks, and the dash cluster (no MPH, RPM, mileage display, Fuel, Temp, Tran Temp, and Oil Pressure).

The diode in the altenator is starting to go out.
I would check the belt to make sure correct tension and check the battery . The battery could be starting to go out , The battery might not be able to hold a charge anymore .
