If you mean that the gas gauge is floating and you do not know the amount of gas in the tank, then the most common cause for this is the fuel level sensor in the tank. The fule tank would need to be removed to replace it.- Tech jk

When truck is in motion going down the road gauge is all over from empty to full when stoped it reads properly

Your gas tank has a float inside that is kart if tne. Fuel. Pump assembly that indicates the amount of fuel in the sends a message to the gauge...sounds like the float is sticking when the gas is sloshing around when moving..causing a false read being sent to the gauge. Most times the tank has to be removed to replace..good luck..

Gas tank

Yes inside the fuel tank itself there is a gas leveling unit. That reads the level of gas inside the tank and send a certain amount of voltage from it to the gauge itself. If the tank were full of fuel the voltage sent is greater than if the tank were empty. You will have to remove the gas tank or I actually prefer removing the truck bed to access the top of the fuel tank. Hope this helps.

Where should i go to if my gas hand is not working?

Your gas hand is measured by a FLOAT, which is located inside the gas tank. You can sometimes get to them by lifting the back seat. Sometimes, you have to take the whole tank off. There is a electrical wire that hooks in your float, which moves your gas guage. That wire may have came loose. I don't know if it has a fuse or not. Might want to check your fuses. You can check to see if your float is getting power by testing the current of the wire. Most everything in your car runs off 12Volts. Hope this helps.

What's wrong when the gas hand stops working? i can have a full tank and the gas gauge hand is still on E.

The fuel float has probably failed. It is located in the gas tank. The part is usually not expensive, but the installation is difficult, as it requires removing the gas tank.

My gas hand floats on my 2002 oldsmobile silhouette

not sure what the hell that means, but if your fuel gauge is moving around then you probably need a new float. It's located inside the gas tank and usually part of the fuel pump. Not an easy job, but possible...

I have a 1994 dodge ram 1500 slt. and the gas gage will not read the amount of gas in the gas tank and gas light stays on when I know the tank is full. leaving me wondering how much gas i run on sometimes....

The problem is with the sensor inside the gas tank since the method of indication used is by passing an electric current & the resistance to that current is a measure of level of liquid in the tank , i.e. the gauge consists of two parts:
  • The sensing unit
  • The indicator
The sensing unit usually uses a float connected to a potentiometer. As the tank empties, the float drops and slides a moving contact along the resistor, increasing its resistance. In addition, when the resistance is at a certain point, it will also turn on a "low fuel" light on some vehicles.
However if this float gets stuck to the bottom of the tank or a leak fills up the float making it sink to the bottom of the tank, thus always indicating 'E' for empty.........................sodeep

How do you get to the gas tank to check and see if sticking

Yes there is a float that is connected to the sending unit in the gas tank. In order to get to it, you have to remove the tank (drain it first) and it all comes out the top of the tank. You will probably want to buy a whole sending unit to put in there. I'm not sure about yours, but the fuel pump and the sending unit may be all one piece. It's not a fun job, so you don't want to do it twice. I would change the fuel pump while i had it out anyway. Good luck!

Gas gage isnt right it keeps floating

The Sorento gs tank is under the floor in the back seat. Flip the seat bottom's forward and pull open the Velcro to access the top of the tank. The fuel pump and sender may be accessible from the top, but you might be unlucky and have t remove the tank.
