I have a 2001 Chevy Venture, it wont start unless I jump start it and it stays running until I shut it off and will not start right back up. Is this the battery or alternator?

Look at the ignition module or the computer. Taking off the battery cable resets the electronics. Have a diagnostic done on it to pinpoint the problem.
Both sides have their own modules. They are behind the panels right beside the middle seats. Remove the back seats (if you have third row seating) Pull the panel (they pop off). Either replace the module or disconnect it and manually open and close the side door.
injection system may have air in it dont know much about this model try cleaning spark plugs by warming them up on a gas cooker not to much just warm clean them and try that might just be damp plugs but it sounds to me that there could be an air blockage in system some ford models diesels are notorious for not starting when the run out if possible check to see if there is any way you can see if there is any fuel getting to carb of inj system
If it starts for 5 seconds out less, and you notice a security light on the dash, go to this link for answers. Gm are notorious for failing antitheft systems

Hi there,
Most commonly with these cars the security system will do this if the battery is "drained" while trying to start the car. ie: a low battery that is too weak to turn the engine over. Usualy the power options & accesories will not work if this is happening.
To fix it you will need to ensure the battery is charged, you then disconnect the battery negative cable for about 1 minute with the key out of the ignition. reconnect the battery cable & start the car normally. Everything should be back to normal.
Let me know if there is anything more you need for this concern.
Farrout!
