I just purchased a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria w/84K miles. It has Automatic Climate Control. The HVAC system is going crazy. The heat does not work at idle/deceleration, but will roast you under acceleration, versus, the A/C will not work under acceleration, but will freeze you half to death at idle/deceleration. I have replaced the following parts to no avail: 1. Motorcraft Thermo Lockout Switch 2. Motorcraft Mode/Damper Door Switch 3. Universal Vacuum Heat/AC Check Valve I am almost certain that I am looking at a vacuum problem, but where do I start looking? I have already spend a couple hundred dollars at a couple of shops, but unfortunately, most of the techs working today were not even born when this car was built. I need some help! Please! Thank You.

    Ok, thanks!

Are Heat/AC check valves car specific? I installed a universal fit NAPA brand.

  • larryinokc Feb 27, 2011

Ok, I've got water in both heater hoses, and to the core. The heater box is HOT regardlesss of what the car is doing (idle/acceleration). The heat only comes out of the vents hot under acceleration, and goes tepid, barely luke warm under decelerationSo what are you saying? The problem may be internal ie: inside the heater box?

I did just find a vacuum line with a screw in the end of it, but I can't find where it goes/went. It has a red stripe on it.

  • larryinokc Feb 27, 2011

The mystery vacuum line is under the hood at the firewall, and it is curved back towards the firewall, but after 30 minutes of looking, I've not a clue whaere it's supposed to go

  • larryinokc Feb 27, 2011

That pic of the heater control valve that you posted is the first part that I installed, except Ford called it a "Thermo lockout switch"

  • larryinokc Feb 27, 2011

Well, it's getting dark now, so it's time to put my toys away. I'm thinking that unplugged vacuum line under the hood is somehow related to the map sensor, at least, according to the vacuum line schematic on the fan shroud it appears to be. I'm willing to bet that the problem and the fix is so simple that it's going to take a 50 cent part, and a week's paycheck to fix it. That's usually the way it goes

Check the vaccuum at the rear of the motor that runs thru the firewall...you may have to remove the lower dash to get to the heater control valve..I will see if I can find you a picture...in mean time take look at "my Tips" section for heating troubles.

here is a great vacuum diagram to trace vacuum lines.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2011

Larry there is a vacuum line that controls the heater control valve that allows the hot water to the heater core..it may have a bad vacuum line that controls the opening and closing of the flapper inside the heater control valve..you may not know the flapper is bad because it is not visible from the outside.

! thing to check if vacuum is okay..make sure that the damper door is opening and closing properly...this converts the air from cool to hot..this is located inside the duct work..requires dash removal....there are several doors inside this duct work...your car is electrical and vacuum controlled both.....the switch that you replaced should control the damper door but check to see if you can hear it opening and closing..if not visibly check it...alot of work involved...cheaper to fix yourself if you have the time to take dash out.

Heater control valve for your car

    Acdelco 15-5832 Heater Water Valve
1985 Ford LTD Crown Victoria 5.0l

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2011

Your heater control valve is electric so that eliminates the vacuum there..so you have vacuum that controls the most likely controls the damper door that is in the air duct under the dash...fluctuation in air is definitely vacuum so stick with it......check all vacuum lines per that drawing and you will get it fixed..just be patient..YOU can fix this yourself, I did mine..don't need a mechanic to charge ya arm and leg...ill look for red vacuum line for ya and yes problem may be internal...inside the duct... there should be 2 vacuum lines that go to the damper door control valve inside the duct

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2011

look at drawing ..red goes to the partial panel door

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2011

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

Mode selector control switch will not change from vent to defrost or floor heat. 1999 Ford Crown Victoria.

If it's cable driven, the cable may have broke the plastic piece it's connected to behind the knob not allowing the turn knob to turn the blend doors through the cable. To find out you will need to take the center trim off and remove the climate control box" the one with all the knobs on it", and see if the cable is connected. Be careful pulling it out as the box will have to be twisted to get to where the cable is attached, very easy to break the plastic pieces as the have been introduced to heat over the last 17 years which degrades the plastic. Hope this helps. Also utube how to remove the climate control unit as this can be very helpful

Crown victoria Climate control is stuck on heat

ned to remove the radio and look at the blend door actuator on top of the hvac box. the actuator goes bad and doesn't move the door from hot to cold. if you see the actuator moving but still no cold air then the blend door could be broken.

Is there an adapter to convert an automatic temperature control to a manual one?

im afraid that you cant find any adapter to convert the system from auto to manual, the manual and automatic temperature control works completely different, the manual climate control controls the temperature and air distribution by vacuums lines and in the automatic climate control, controls the temperature and air distribution by a series of blend doors that works electronically

My 04 crown vic will not change off from defrost, indicator lights show floor and vent when pushed but air flow stays on defrost, it does have automatic climate control if that makes any difference

Check for vacum at the heater control ports behind the dash and for vacum leaks. For safty reasons the
system is designed to go to defrost mode in case you lose vacum to the system. Hope this helps.

2006 Ford Crown Victoria HVAC only blows thru windshield defrost

You have a vacuum leak. Defrost is the default postion(no Vacuum). Start by finding the small black vacuum line near the heater hoses at the fire wall under the hood.Trace it back, it should go to a square black reservoir . Not totally sure exactly where it is located on this model, shop manual doesn't show a very good pic, but it states to remove wiper arm and pivot shaft to remove it. You will see a second line going from here to intake manifold vacuum port. Make sure you don't have a leak there somewhere.
