My rear brakes lock up when I apply the brakes. It started years ago and use to only happen when I first started driving the car, now it's all the time. We've changed out the rear brakes and that worked for about a week, now they need to be readjusted all the time. What is going on?

Look at the front brakes. If they did their job, the rear brakes possibly wouldn't need to lock up. Also check the emergency brake that it's adjusted properly; if its cam (at rear brakes) is rotated because of maladjustment of the cable, that might cause a wedged effect when the brakes are applied.

SOURCE: ABS brake problem, 1994 Chevrolet Corsica

You have a bad master cylinder my friend, all the braking force is going to the rear hence the lockup, the front brakes most likely don't do anthing, all mdern brake systems are split, so you have at least 2 wheels working, in effect the car has 2 master cylinders in one unit.

SOURCE: 2002 tahoe breaks lock up during driving

It sounds like the rear calipers are bad. Raise the rear wheels and see if you can turn the tires. If you can't, open the bleeder. If you still can't replace the caliper. If you can turn the wheel after you open the bleeder, replace the brake hose to that wheel.

SOURCE: Only the left rear trailer light comes on when I apply the brakes.

I had the same problem with my 2002 Silverado last summer when I first bought my boat and was getting the trailer ready to go. Like an idiot, I rewired the boat trailer on that side before I decided to look at the owner's manual. The pickup has separate fuses for right and left side of trailer. They're located in the big box in the engine compartment. I replaced the 10 or 15 size fuse and haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps!

Rear brakes locking up

Have you checked the rubber hose connecting the metal lines with the axle ? The hose may not be allowing brake fluid to return to the master cyl.

2001 ford taurus wont get out of park

Most of the time the problem is caused by the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
When you turn the key on, power is applied to the solenoid and stepping on the brake cuts that power.

Brakes lock up

What part of the brakes lock up font ones or the rear ones. Alot of rear brakes do this. If you do alot of baking up they self adjust tighter. That's how there designed. Once you drive for awhile they'll warm up and not lock up so much. Drive in so dirt and brake as usual when you say they lock up and see if its the front ones or the rear. If its the rear they need to be adjusted. If its the front then as long as you say abs is working there has to be a problem with calipers. But befor we get any further let me know what happens after you do what's listed.

If I leave my 2003 3 series touring parked on my drive for a week or more, with the handbrake on and it has been cold and/or wet during that time, my rear brakes lock. The only way to free them is to drive...

What is happening is that your handbrake shoes are rusting onto the inside of of your brake drum ( inside the rear disks)
As the park brake is separate from your rear disks it doesn't get used ( cleaned ) during normal driving.
You could try gently applying your handbrake whilst moving to see if it will polish the brake linings and stop them siezing

Back brakes lock up

There are several conditions that can cause this to happen. You want to start out by checking the parking brake assembly, particularly the cable for the right rear or passenger side brake. Make certain the cable moves freely when the park brake is applied and released completely when the park brake is disengaged.
Next, remove the rear brake drum and check for any oil, grease or brake fluid contamination of the brake shoes. Any contamination of this type will cause the brake to hang up when applied.
If that checks good, make sure the brake system hardware if working properly and components have not dislodged from there installed position be sure there are no broken return springs or very rusted and weak components.
Generally what happens is a wheel cylinder begins to leak, contaminated the shoes and cause them to become sticky when the shoe contacts the drum or a return spring breaks or comes off for various reasons.
Check it out and let me know.

88 chevy 2wd rear right tire

You didn't say what the shop checked so I may be repeating something they already looked at. Check the brake caliper and I would also drain the old brake fluid and put in new fluid. You didn't mention if it was making any noise when this happens so I'll assume it's not a problem with your wheel bearings.

take the wheel and drum off the back and check that the shoes are not worn out on the edges..what happens is the end wears off first but as pressure is applied the shoe moves to where there is some pad left..severe brake dust can do it too. get the brakes checked as soon as you can.to clean and adjust the rear brakes is not that expensive.

Brakes Locking Up

There is no switch on the transmission that can do this. Do all the wheels lock or just one. When it starts acting up get out and check the wheels and see if one or all are very hot. You likely have a bad brake hose on one wheel.

Sheift lock

The term "shift lock" is the system that is in place to prevent the vehicle from being shifted out of Park into Reverse or Drive WITHOUT having the driver's foot firmly on the brake pedal. The brake light switch on the brake pedal closes a circuit that energizes a solenoid under the shifter. When the brake is applied, and the solenoid is energized, the shift lever is no longer "locked", and can be moved to the desired position.
The idea here stems from a phenonomon several years ago that dealt with the issue of "Sudden Intended Acceleration". What was happening here was, for some unknown reason, engines started developing high RPMS for no reason, and several accisents were reported due to this issue. The vehicle would accelerate "unintendedly", when putting into drive or reverse, and could hit something.
