It is possible that you may only need a tune up. I hope thats it anyway. Which would consist of changing your spark plugs and wires, if you have the distributor model then replace ddistributor cap and rotor button. Now if this doesnt work you may have a more severe problem. Which sounds to me that you have a blown head gasket or a cracked head. See when you first start your car the heads or gasket is cold, which would leave your car running great but as the car gets hot the heads and gaskets expand, therefore letting valuable compression escape.. Hope this helps these are very valuable tips..

You'll do well to start by checking your fuel line from the gas tank on up. about 3 months ago I had a similar situation, come to find out my gas lines to the tank were loose! I guess anything is possible after 20 years on the road. Good luck!

worth checking the fuel tank for holes or there might be some fuel delivery pipes leaking badly. Or it might be an O2 sensor not giving correct signal to ecu thus consuming so much fuel.

My gas gauge moves up and down alot. 1 min i have 3/4 tank of fuel and the next im down 1/2 tank of gas. Barely getting 15 mile to a gallon.

Sounds like the sending unit in the tank might be bad. If you are really using that much fuel, bad O2 senors or mass air flow sensor might be the culprit. Otherwise, possible fuel leak.

Car started only after several cranks, was told fuel pump replacement, is it normal with 68,000 miles?

You probably have a submersable pump. If you have run the gas on below 1/4 tank for some time, you probably burned out the pump. Alway fill up 1/2 tank or more.

And with the mileage, it isn't unusual to replace the pump.

My gas tank is significantly leaking only when almost full.

it could be that it has or is getting air in the tank in the form of vapors i know that it may seem unlikely but it does happen so next time that you go to fill up try opening up the tank cap while you go pay let ventilate and when you put the nozzle in do not shove it all the way in just enough for the vapor guard to cover the mouth and use the control of flow method.
