You have a vaccuum leak somwhere, those are tough to find sometimes. An easy way is when you have the car running, spray some brake cleaner or carb/choke cleaner everywhere, the engine does like this stuff and should **** it up at the leak the engine will in turn change it's idle, that is the easiest way to find a vaccuum leak sometimes.

its too lean-probly hav a vacuum leak causing it-like a bad egr valve or hoses-listen under the hood--get fixed soon cause engine head can ruin--a bad injector can doit too--dont just replace parts since car is old-pinpoint cure w other opinions or factory scan gear
Defrost is a default position for when there is a loss of vacuum. The vacuum controls the blend air doors. Start at the intake manifold and follow the vacuum hoses. There should be one that goes to a resivour (I think its behind a fender). It should T off and go inside the car. If the resivour is cracked or any of the lines are leaking that will cause the blower to only go through defrost.
I have also seen where ford uses plastic tubes and the dry battery acid had fallen on the tubes and ate holes in them. If any of the plastic tubes are broken, then each broken end can be inserted into a small enough rubber vacuum hose to repair them.
REMOVE EGR VALVE CLEAN OUT THE CARBON INSIDE THE EGR VALVE PORT HOLE IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHERE EGR VALVE SITS.CAREFULLY USE A PIECE OF CLOTHES RACK OR A TINY SCREW DRIVER CLEAN CARBON OUT ROUND HOLE.USE A SHOP VAC TO VACUUM UP THE DEBRIS TO KEEP FROM GETTING INSIDE INTAKE.DONT USE SHOP VAC IF YOU HAVE ANY FUEL LEAKS OR SMELL GAS FUMES UNDER THE HOOD.
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak, a problem with the wiring, or a bad PCM. Check wiring for pinched, chafed, pierced, or broken wires. Make sure vacuum supply is good, and not collapsing when the vehicle is running. Beyond that, a trip to the dealer may be in order.
Check the EGR tubes for carbon build up. It's not the fact that the EGR valve keeps going bad, the reason that there it thinks it's malfunctioning is the tubes itself will not allow enough flow. Remove them and clean them out the best you can.
