1996 Volkswagon Jetta Timing Belt replacement Procedure

1996-1999 Toyota Corolla valve timing:
It is very easy to install the timing belt on 1997 Toyota Corolla. Do the following:
- Mark the numbers 1,2 and 3 on the spark plug wires with permanent marker or nail polish and remain the 4th one unmarked. This is necessary so that you can easily remember the spark plug wires order later on their original position.
- Remove the spark plugs so that the engine can easily be rotated.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the v- groove mark on the crankshaft pulley with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover. If these marks are aligned the piston is always on the Top Dead Position (TDC).


- To replace the timing belt remove the crankshaft pulley, upper and lower timing covers.
- Temporarily screw in the crankshaft bolt in its place to rotate the crankshaft with the spanner and align the v- groove of lower crankshaft gear with the index mark on the oil pump cover as shown in the following diagram.
- Inspect the cam shaft mark through the small hole on the cam shaft sprocket. The punch mark should be exactly behind the hole on the cam shaft sprocket as shown in the following diagram.



- Loosen the timing bearing bolt, press the bearing forcefully against the spring with some suitable tool and lock it there temporarily.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Remove the timing bearing.
- Replace the new timing belt and bearing with the original.
- Install in the reverse order of dis-assembly.
NOTE: NEVER PUT EXTRA FORCE ON TIMING BEARING TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT TENSION. JUST LOOSEN THE TIMING BEARING BOLT AND THE SPRING ATTACHED TO IT WILL PULL THE BEARING IT SELF WITH THE PRESET TENSION TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT.

sounds like timeing blt tenchner is bad not keeping timeing belt tight lowing it to jump time

For all timing belts you should start with the crank sprocket pointing at TDC and the cam sprockets pointing at their designated marks.

You should be able to mark the old belt and and put corresponding marks on the cam and crank pulleys, then remove the old belt and transfer the marks to the new belt and install it.

Personally I would buy a manual as this would provide you with a step by step guide to performing the repair.

I am not positive that this is an interference engine, it looks like it is to me. If you are not accurate in your timing you will cause severe engine damage.

always be sure to set to top dead cyl1 before removing belt. there will be mark on the cam gear and another on flywheel seen through passage in bellhousing there will also be a timing mark on the balance shaft. I found it best to ignore timing mark on balance shaft gear and just remove distributor cap. you will see rotor pointing to #1 plug wire and rotor will also line up to a small notch in distributor body. this way is more accurate. also after setting timing belt turn motor over 2 full turns then recheck timing marks again. while your in there check the bearings in all idler pulleys and tensioner pulleys, hate to have to go back in there again just for a noisey bearing later. good luck.

i can walk u through doing a t belt. But if u are not sure if u are able to do it DO NOT DO IT cause if u are wrong if cause a lot of engine damage.

you need to remove front bumper , remove front into service position , remove aux belts set timing marks up ( you will need to use locking tools ) lock crank and cam shaft remove belt replace belt and tensioners . please note it is also use full to check water pump
