Congrats on a find.....even if there is bellypan cancer. The replacement is time consuming but not tough for even a novice mechanic. And by belly pan you mean the tunnel bottem plate? Only if you decide to replace the housing for the cable as well. There are aftermarket kits that allow you to attach the proper end to the cable after you push/thread it through an intact housing.

Oil coming out exhaust pipe, wont idle on 1968 VW motor

You need to remove the motor & dismantle it, then check the cylinder sleeves & pistons for wear, the rings will definately be worn. Best is to have the motor reconditioned if you are unable to do it yourself. There are no short cuts if oil is emitting from the exhaust.

Could be something as simple as an accelerater cable.

I have a 67 karmann ghia with a 1300cc. I recently timed it and it started great. I am having problem with it not developing enough power to get out of first gear and into second. Would this be a ignition...

Provided that the engine is in good condition (nothing like a pulled stud) Start with the points (0.4mm) Now reset the timing to 5 degrees advance - static. Then Set the valves (0.15mm) Make sure the carburetor is clean and correctly set. To set it, warm up the motor to operating temperature, set the idle at 750 rpm an screw the volume control screw out a few turns. Then screw it back in slowly till you notice the rpms start to drop. Then back it out an 1/8 of a turn to a 1/4 of a turn. Now set the idle at 700 rpm again. It may be wise to check that the butterfly valve shaft has not worn the carburetor. If that happens the engine will run erratically due to the motor receiving a false air supply.

What is the best way to drain my fuel tank on a 1967 karmann ghia see i can replace the fuel tank tube filter

I drained mine by unbolting the entire tank (only 4 bolts on top) taking it out and inverting it for drainage.
BUT, here are two shortcuts that I realized later:
a ) You can get get under the front hood beneath the car (not easy to reach) and unhook the main fuel line from tank to engine.
b) The easiest way is just unhook the fuel supply line from tank to the carb and drain it slowly and best if parked at inclined level for better drainage down the hill. Collect Fuel in a fuel container.

Are the new beetle convertibles overall bad cars? Consumer Reports said they do not reccomend this vehicle. I really want to buy one but don't have the money to lose. I owned a 1980 Scirocco and that car...

i worked for vw for 14 years and had 32 beetles as company cars.overall funky cars, very chick(sorry chic)the cost of replacing a bulb is out of this world(you have to take off the bumpers etc to get at the lamp).mechanically same as mk 5 golf(floorpan from jetta)power hood, pain in the a.. when it goes wrong.
would i buy one...? yeah, why not, rather have an R32 instead, leaves black/whites for dust.......

Rear window glass has loosened from the roof

well I went to Lowes and shopped for a construction adhesive. I picked PL brand Polyurethane Premium Construction Adhesive because it is (so they say) 3 times stronger than ordinary adhesives.
It is also water and weather proof
Bonds to wood, metal, stone, concrete, masonry, bricks, vinyl, plastics
It came in a tube (you know.. chaulking gun style)

How could it NOT hold glass to fabric??? Thats what I said to myself.. well when we have nothing to lose, we'll try anything.

I put a good bead about 3/8 of an inch in between the glass and fabric, waited 7 days and then razored the excess off the glass. Applied black permanent marker and I'm done. So, it's been about 2 weeks and it's holding well so far.
I'm a betting man, but I won't bet this is going to hold... would you?
