Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

Shift prob from 1rst to 2nd

Dear Sir...I have 2001 5.9 w/auto and 4x4....Recently my transmission began shifting from 1rst to 2nd only when my engine hit 4000 RPMs. All other funtions are still all in the norm. No other symptons except the trans finding it necessary wait for these 4000 RPms to shift itself out of 1rst to 2nd. Please we are at the mercy to others here in Ecuador and need your help.     Dear Sir......That is not the answers I was looking for.........We need ALL possibilities stemming from the detailed symptom presented to you. Along with all possible parts needed to resolve this problem. My family and I are out of the country, (Ecuador) and need to order parts ASAP to rectify this problem and return home within next few weeks....PLEASE! We need list of ALL possible reasons for this problem so as to replace these possibilities with the necessary parts. We have garage and persons to do these necessary replacements, but they have no idea as to what these possibilities might be within our 2001 5.9 4x4 Dodge Durango. Your the Doctor they say(and we agree) and its to you we give the symptoms and its for you to give all possibilities as to what and only what could be causing this SUV to find it necessary to reach 4000RPMs before shifting from !rst to 2nd. There is always a list of possible reasons and solutions for any problem. Well,this transmissions symptom has a limited set of possible defective parts that may or may not be causing this shifting problem. Its this list of possibilities along with necessary parts needed to resolve these possibilities that we so desperately need.     Dear Sir..........Our durango is not shifting from 1rst to second until the engines RPMs have reached an alarming rate of 4000 rpms.......please give me ALL possibilities of which could cause this ONE problem and please list ALL possibilities......and SIr, there is allways a limited list of possibilities....thank you........R.Gruen P.S. My engine has no surge problems as with a bad throttle sensor. Look deeper and the possible answers to this late shifting problem will be apparent to us all.Still stuck in Ecuador and rising to the challenge..Thank You R.Gruen

This often happens because of faults in the gearbox. If it automatic transmission can also be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor.

    Dear Sir I understand your problem. I can find dealers that ship car parts for your car Worldwide. However I suggest find any kind of mechanic to do some test on your car, a dodge 4wd transmission costs over $3000, before replacing the whole box a local mechanic should check that is not just a few dollars sensorin need of replacement, or a problem with the car computer.

    Here is a dodge part dealer shipping internationally.

    Before replacing transmission find a local mechanic, if he has a scanner ask him to test the car computer.
    Ask also to check and eventually replace throttle position sensor, that should be at the base of the throttle, here is a picture:

    I told you, possible causes are :
    throttle position sensor - it costs $37
    Computer - to test this you need a scanner. - Cost around $200
    Gear box - you need to replace the gear box - Cost over $3000

    You can start from testing the sensor or the Computer
    To test the sensor Here is explained how to test it

    To test the computer buy the tools to scan your car computer. , you will get a code in return post here the code and we will find out what the problem is.

    If sensor and computer are ok replace gear box.

    Just select dodge durango 2001 in the top bar , and in parts box select automatic transmission.
    , you still need a local mechanic if you have to replace gear box, it is a delicate job.
    My suggestion, call (800) 950-7105 and order throttle position sensor, if the gear is not shifting until high rpm sounds like a faulty sensor that doesn't detect your throttle position.
    Replacing it is not very complicate.

    Regarding the torque converter, to diagnose if there is a problem with it you need to scan the PCM car computer.
    Buy the sensor and the scanner posted in my previous mail, this will be enough to discard other problems and understand if to replace whole transmission.

    The torque converter has a solenoid inside that can go bad, to test this you scan the ecm
    Here is replacement for durango ecm
    Parts that can be involved are:
    Throttle pos sensor (aka speed sensor)
    ECM (Pcm is part of ECM)
    Torque converter solenoid.
    Automatic transmission box.
    The less you need to find out the problem is a scanner to connect to car computer and get error code, from description sounds like throttle sensor or a problem with computer.

Runs great until shifting from 1rst to 2nd gear (auto-trans)suddenly bogs down like it went into neutral, what could this be


run the fault codes and check for TCM problem. If it shifts into neutral like you describe then the engine would increase in rpms as the load came off. More than likely shifting into a too high gear which indicates a selector program problem.

I have a 2001 kia sportage 4x4 and had to recently change the transmission. It is curently at the mechanic and the transmissions he has got(2 at this point) he said won't shift and will only do 20mph.


Is a 2001 really worth the cost of a new transmission? It could be the computer not recognizing the new transmission. Is your mechanic familar with Kia/Hyundai?

1988 chevy 4x4 k1500 auto tranny wont shift into 2nd, 3rd etc


Check the sensors on the transmission. May just be corrosion on the sensors or it may be a faulty sensor. Also, the torque converter bearing may have went bad due to the running it on low transmission fluid.

My 2001 GMC Jimmy 4x4 Automatic with 84K miles. It winds when I put it in reverse and I think I only have 1st and 2nd gear. Additionally it revs high, like over 3000 rpm, delays and then eventually...


It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

Slower engine speed in 4wd mode, 1st or 2nd gear (auto trans)


mcdevito75 here, I would figure yes, if your shifting while in motion, definetly yes, when you shift your changeing gear ratios in the 4 wheel drive or the transmission, this will cause the engine to slow but also make the gas pedal moe responsive.If you feel or hear this slowing down of the engine while standing still (at a red light) it"s most likely the computer contolled sensor in the tranny. I woulkd still check with my local shop for their advice too.

1998 chevy k1500 4x4 4 speed auto.transmission wont shift out of 2nd gear. shifts fine from 1st to 2nd first and reverse is fine wont shift out of first, shift servos have been replaced.


Had a similar problem with same model pickup but would shift into third only after reaching high RPM in second @5000. There was TSB that came out about this a few years ago. I had to replace the valve body in the transmission to fix the problem and worked perfectly after that. Hope this helps!

Gear jerking


when it jerks does the check engine light come on? If so find a reputable transmission shop and it is a simple fix. Costed me $88

Transmission won't shift!


Does it just not shift up to 3rd or when it shifts to 3rd it is just like neutral?
